Yes, the sunset was beautiful! Was hoping it would warm up to 70 like "they" said it would. Never made it. It was another chilly rainy day. Well, got my house cleaned anyway. If it does finally warm up, I'll be ready to do some gardening! Good Night.

I am so exhausted! I spent 4 hours this afternoon priming the aviary coop my DH built and it has completely worn me out. To look at it you would think it should take no time at all, but there are so many nooks, crannies, and ledges. I'm supposed to put on the first coat of paint tomorrow, but I can honestly say my motivation and drive to do so is pretty much non-existent at this point. I'm usually good at keeping up with my girls and their needs, but I'm thinking the birds have me on this one. As one of my co-workers might say...

On a brighter note, my injured buff is acting normal again, but I'm going to keep her separated until the pecked area of her head looks better.
Have a good night everyone.

teeville -- if you spray her good with blu-kote you should be able to put her right back in. It usually does a nice job or preventing picking, even on raw areas.

Oh sure. Ask the plant guy.

The cicadas I've seen have been darker brown and more "crispy" looking. But I would not rule it out.
I'll have to do some checking around to see if any classmates or professors might know.

It rained here all day and Wednesday is my long day at school, but I checked the girls before leaving this morning. THey were all under the tent garage, cozy and dry. Along with 50,000 sparrows who keep eating the crumble.
Since switching over to layer crumble, my hens don't seem to eat it at all. They are fine eating scratch grains and treats as well as foraging.

So today, I bought a bag of pellets hoping that the chicks eat that and the pieces are too big for the sparrow hoard. Any ideas on what to feed if they don't like that?

If they're not eating their food -- and you've ruled out something being terribly wrong with it -- then they are getting enough/too much to eat else where. I, personally, would cut back on the treats. When they get hungry they'll eat the feed.

The only thing wrong with the crumble (Dumor brand) is that the sparrows love it. My first thought was it had something to do with the protein content. However, your logic makes sense.

My little flock does get an awful lot of free range area to forage in. The scratch gets strewn all over their area once a day, while the crumble sits in the holder at the same place. Plus, they get whatever else they find in the run. Cantelope and watermelon rinds get thrown randomly whenever I have one for myself, so they have to look for it. The only real treats they get are mealworms that I use when I want them to do something specific to suit my needs/wants.

Part of the problem is that I'm getting anxious for some eggs from these free-loading girls. (If I wanted another female to support I'd get married again,
