Yes, please.

In fact, I would help you cut them. Either all the way or serious pruning. I think you might try the pruning first and see if they produce a better yield next year. It has worked for me.

I agree. When we bought our property there were many apple trees that were not producing. My DH loves to prune and it is almost unbelievable what they do now.

So Blueberry is on day 10 of sitting on these BCM eggs I hauled back from California. I candled the eggs this morning and, for sure, have 3 have little active moving babies!

Of course I can't be definative about the other eggs but they don't smell so they get to stay under her for the time being. Why is this so much fun?

which is unsual because I'm a very early riser. Not as early as Opa though but close! My flock was ready and waiting, all off their roosts and standing by the door. I already had 4 eggs in the boxes. One was quite large and I've had several that size. I noticed some of you weigh your eggs and was wondering if you use a special egg scale and/or if the digital food scale I have would work just as well?
Also with everyone talking about hawks, I had a few I've seen periodically. I usually can hear them screeching to each other as they sit ontop the telephone pole down the road or in the tree tops of our pines. I have no idea what type they are....we just call them chicken hawks and make sure the girls stay in the run when they are visiting the area.

I just use a cheap digital postal scale that they want to roll off of- it's not totally accurate, but close enough. Here is a link to the chart of sizes. The one I got yesterday is off the charts for jumbo.

Has anyone ever put grass seed down with chickens free ranging? Any ideas on how to actually get grass to grow??

I have a digital scale I bought a couple years back thinking it would useful in the kitchen on a daily basis....WRONG... I never use the darn thing! I'm gonna try it for the eggs. I think I'll put a tiny piece of that rubber lining used to place in cupboards to keep the eggs from rolling. Might have to adjust it though.

Yes my DH just did this week. He put up a fence around the area to keep the chickens out for it was one of their favorite spots to dust bathe. Boy were they surprised! He did dig up another spot for them though. As for getting it to grow...just water it regularly couple times a day.

Thanks for the idea. My chickens have plenty of area to dust bathe in my flower garden in front.

Had new sidewalk put in so I wouldn't have to fight the mud every spring. Man, these chickens are costly!

Navychick - Wow, I just looked at your coop - what a cool design! That thing is very original and appears well built. Hats off to you and your husband.
