Well it's end of summer. Yesterday was the tractor show which my son went with my dad... I had no interest in taking him. It was a good field trip for the day. I think they said there were about 800. Today like every year we go into Mackinaw City for the annual Semi parade to end the season. You have to take the needed gear... winter coat, hat, gloves, a couple blankets and hearing protection. The parade starts after dark and the Semi's, all shined, lighted and noisy cross the bridge, go through town and back over the bridge. This year was a little smaller only about 110. Everyone looks forward to it but for me it usually means the end of the warm weather.

Here is two opportunities for someone~
1. I have one bantam and would love another hen or two (any size) that is tame and tests negative for cocci in the stool and other major illness.
2. I know a lady who has standard hens and wants to start a bantam group also. Does anyone have bantams for sale? Sounds like my friend could house 4-6.
Thanks everyone, please PM me if you have any leads!

p.s. my friend just built a separate bantam coop = spoiled and loved.

Look up Shelleyb1969. She has a web page. Starbright farms. Her bantum Cochins and Silkies are beautiful.

Huston's Happy Hens :

I have a 1 yr old leghorn who is unstable on her feet - has difficulty getting up - I was able to catch her because she couldn't get far before she sat down again - wattle very bright and healthy looking, she's eating/drinking fine - just noticed her behavior this afternoon - I have separated her from the flock - anyone ever have a similar issue? - thanks

Hi Nancy and Steve!!!
This year I have a hen who got infested with mites. I started to notice that when she got up she was real slow. On inspection she was loaded with the little devils! I usually have a hidden population of mites on someone since I have wild birds come in and out of their run. But I have never seen hundreds on one hen. She got a bath to kill the first batch and another a week later. Also has egg masses on her belly. Used poultry drench to help get her strengh back and she is slowly coming anound. Inspected the rest of the flock and two other hens had some mites but no one else.
Leg issues in my hens can also mean that they have something wrong in their belly, such as developing into an internal layer. I have also had problems with Maraks one year that showed up as lameness.
Also check feet for splinters !!

thanks, everyone.

That sadness aside, I found the most inexpensive way to keep geese from whatever area you don't want them in...lol..had I known, I could have planted a garden this year.

My husband and I just stretched a rope across the yard to use as a clothesline- finally got the washer fixed, only took three months, but the dryer is still broken.

Thats it- just a rope.

No matter how hard I try coaxing, or herding, or encouraging- my trio will not walk under the rope.

No clothes hanging on it yet. Cant wait to see their reaction once I put flying "ghosts" on the rope...

Yes, please.

In fact, I would help you cut them. Either all the way or serious pruning. I think you might try the pruning first and see if they produce a better yield next year. It has worked for me.

I agree. When we bought our property there were many apple trees that were not producing. My DH loves to prune and it is almost unbelievable what they do now.

RaZ, When I planted it was just a twig. But that was long ago, & now it's big. I cut the top ten or fifteen feet out three yrs ago. Last year we tried again. Many (water sprouts?) now six to eight ft tall/long growing. Same kind of growth was cut out last summer. I want to keep the tree. Produces shade, lots of apples, some even look like apples before they mummify, turn brown and rot , on or off the tree. It's a Northern Spy about 40 yrs old. Same pattern of fruiting been goin on since it started to produce fruit. Beautiful flowers. Oh yeh, Lots of worms in apples too.

Can you, or anyone else give me some help with these probs? I don't want to spray POISONS ( But did try tha`t maybe 15 yrs ago.
