very funny.....

Thank you for the advice! I avoided all medication so far except hormones and vitamins do help!
5-htp is a good supplement for sleep also.
I don't know why the chicks crying frantically in the car set my nerves a jumping, but it did. The chicks have since calmed down and I am thankful.
Nothing like a peeping chick or a crying baby!

It is neat to hear of all the sweet sweet little hens and my Bobbi, my last hen here, is that one. The smart, friendly, sweet one.
So that has made it hard to find a friend for her and hard to find a home for her.
I continue to pray and look!

I can keep her with these chicks once they grow up or I can rehome her if a gentle home is available. I just don't want to keep her alone much longer. That is really lonely for a hen!
Thanks for all the brainstorming you have done with me!

Thought I'd leave a nice recommendation to a local butcher, Ann Westover in Caro, who owns Westover Wild Wings Poultry Processing, she also does rabbits. They processed my ducks and roosters today for me. She's a very nice lady, retired Marine, and she truely impressed me.
Anyone who cannot bring themselves to slaughter their own hand-raised fowl, like me, she's the lady to see. There are some nice articles about how she started her own business if you google Westover Wild Wings. I think now I should very easily be able to gather some fertile eggs next spring and either incubate another batch, unless I have a hen go broody, and put meat in the freezer. She does it for $1.25 per chicken.

chicken grandma, you could most likely re-home the chicks easy enough, but have you thought of getting some chicken diapers and making your older, sweeter hen a house hen? you could set up a kennel for her to sleep in at night, just through a blanket over it to give her dark time. I really think you would feel better, as she would not be so lonesome; She is so small she may be very happy as a house pet,as you said she likes to cuddle on your lap. Then you wouldn't worry about how she is doing in a new home. There are some on here that have litter trained ducks(never would have thought that could be done) Sorry you are having such a hard time.

Thank you for caring. My son has severe allergies so we don't have any animals indoors. Bobbi would be pleased with your suggestion! Yes, hard to find a home for a 1.5lb shy/timid with other birds hen.

How meaty was the chantecler post processing? I know they are supposed to be dual purpose, so hopefully you'll get a good meal or two out of him.

good job posting pics, nice variety of eggs too...

I made a big double batch of stuffing tonight using the fresh giblets from this mornings butchering and lots of extra celery and onions. Also put in a white cake and will serve fresh fruit over it instead of frosting it. Hubby gets spoiled when he stays OUT of the kitchen and doesn't make messes in the house
