Geese are in for the night, went into their night enclosure without too much delay, of course they've been going in and out all day while I finished putting it together, but this time I closed the door. The enclosure is about 7 foot by 10 foot, 6 feet tall, made of rigid "hog panel" type fencing panels held together with wire and zip ties. The panels are heavy-gauge woven wire, 4 inches square. I do worry about raccoons reaching through to grab the geese as I've heard they'll do with chickens. I do have some 1/2" hardware cloth that I can wire onto the panels--but not tonight... I'm thinking that geese are better able to defend themselves than chickens, too. But still I'll worry.
They were so calm today! I got a kiddy wading pool filled for them. Henry spent the most time in there, Penelope some time, Libby just stood beside it and drank from time to time. But Libby at least likes my cooking! Well, not cooking exactly of course. But she's eating the 15% (chicken) developer crumble (grumble!) a lot more than the other two, who keep taking a look at it, maybe a tiny nibble, then they walk away shaking their heads. They want Kim's good home cookin' I guess.
But thanks, KrisRose, I feels better about the feeding question. And they all ate a lot of grass today.
The neighbors with dogs on our little road all walk them off-leash, which is fine as they are all pretty well-trained and it's just a private road with 10 houses on it. The neighbor across the street walks his golden retrievers and he's talked enthusiastically in the past about the livestock the people who owned our house a few owners ago had. (No one else on the road has anything beyond cats and dogs.) This guy has told me repeatedly about the geese that used to live here, and how they'd wander over to his house and walk through his yard. He always seemed to enjoy those memories a lot. Anyway, he spotted Henry, Penelope, and Libby right away when he was walking past today and wanted to know all about them. He was really happy to see them, said repeatedly how beautiful they are.
Kim--once again--
Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart. I know you had a lonely drive home. Just wanted you to know, they are doing well and I love them.
