I have 9 of them and they each had varying sized wattles and combs at 19 weeks. The closer they are to laying, the bigger their combs and wattles get.

Im sorry. Just backed up a few pages and re-read stuff. Wow, didn't know there had been so MANY posts. Yeah, I didn't mean to hurt anybody personally. Really, the only thing I have in COMMON with anyone on here is chickens.

Hey~! You have ANXIETY in common with ME! And I am grateful to have a buddy in that department! Also you have a wacky sense of humor which is very much appreciated!

Wow, thank you for whoever nominated me! I am honored! I didn't think I was deserving (Wayne's World: I'm not worthy!)! I love how many Michiganders are on the list of the awardees!

Oh Oh! What did I do to get on that list? What does that mean? I am opinionated. Does that = Spirit?

Geese are in for the night, went into their night enclosure without too much delay, of course they've been going in and out all day while I finished putting it together, but this time I closed the door. The enclosure is about 7 foot by 10 foot, 6 feet tall, made of rigid "hog panel" type fencing panels held together with wire and zip ties. The panels are heavy-gauge woven wire, 4 inches square. I do worry about raccoons reaching through to grab the geese as I've heard they'll do with chickens. I do have some 1/2" hardware cloth that I can wire onto the panels--but not tonight... I'm thinking that geese are better able to defend themselves than chickens, too. But still I'll worry.

They were so calm today! I got a kiddy wading pool filled for them. Henry spent the most time in there, Penelope some time, Libby just stood beside it and drank from time to time. But Libby at least likes my cooking! Well, not cooking exactly of course. But she's eating the 15% (chicken) developer crumble (grumble!) a lot more than the other two, who keep taking a look at it, maybe a tiny nibble, then they walk away shaking their heads. They want Kim's good home cookin' I guess.

But thanks, KrisRose, I feels better about the feeding question. And they all ate a lot of grass today.

The neighbors with dogs on our little road all walk them off-leash, which is fine as they are all pretty well-trained and it's just a private road with 10 houses on it. The neighbor across the street walks his golden retrievers and he's talked enthusiastically in the past about the livestock the people who owned our house a few owners ago had. (No one else on the road has anything beyond cats and dogs.) This guy has told me repeatedly about the geese that used to live here, and how they'd wander over to his house and walk through his yard. He always seemed to enjoy those memories a lot. Anyway, he spotted Henry, Penelope, and Libby right away when he was walking past today and wanted to know all about them. He was really happy to see them, said repeatedly how beautiful they are.

Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart. I know you had a lonely drive home. Just wanted you to know, they are doing well and I love them.

Taken from the announcement thread:

1) BYC Educator – These individuals are very knowledgeable and skilled in one or more facets of poultry breeding, raising and/or showing. Most peeps trust the knowledge and advice they give.

2) BYC Friend – These individuals are just plain fun and great to have around! They are our favorite comedians and enablers; our most cluckative. They are always accessible to lend a cordial and helping hand. Their enthusiasm encourages us – their empathy comforts us.

3) BYC Spirit – These individuals best demonstrate ALL-AROUND outstanding service and commitment to the BYC members and community. While maybe not “expert” educators, they are trusted Educators nonetheless, as well as Friends to all. They are dedicated to the BYC Community as a whole, and strive to help promote, support and uphold its values and goals.

Seeing the spirit by my name, I can't help but think of Monty Python's Life of Brian (or should I say, Bwian!):

"The wittle wascal has spiwit!"
"Has what, sir?"
"Spiwit!"
"Oh, that he did, sir."
"No no, spiwit- bwavado, a bit of dawing do."
"Ah yes- about eleven, sir."

Well, originally with one of my aunts... Do you still have Susanna the chicken? Which one is she?

RANDOM QUESTION!

Um, I know this is a weird question, but I am not sure what to do. It has never come up before. When a deer is nailed by a car and falls on your property, what is the best thing to do? Definitely dead, I checked, and fresh as of a few hours ago. Should I bury it (hard task, our soil is FULL of rocks omg)? Or drag out out to the back of the property and let the coyotes take care of it? Or wrap it up in plastic and put it in the garbage bin? It is a big doe. We have a few acres.

I hope the turkey vultures are still around, I saw some last week. If they haven't gone south yet, I know they can pick the carcass clean in a day or two.
