Here are my poop boards. I have two "tables" that DH made for the coop. They work great! Just scrape them off a couple times a week. Keeps the floor much cleaner too.

nagging cough keeping me from sleep tonight. We were blessed tonight with a deer my DH got with his bow. The dog is probably even more excited than we are. Saturday will bring a day of deer processing, canning and grinding meat. Sweet dreams.

I may have some sooner than spring. I was thinking about seperating the Icelandics so I can get some eggs for Farmerboy. I just have to get the fencing done and covered first. Just not enough time and to make things worse... I saw snowflakes this morning

Nova, as soon as the chickens hear me open the feed can on the porch they come running from all directions.

Oh I need to wait until spring. It's quite cold out to have chicks the brooder hutch in my garage and the brooder area in my coop is occupied by Blueberry and the Marans. Once they get bigger and I weed out the roosters I will be good to go! Do you think you will breed your pretty BR (once she starts laying)? She's georgous.

Gosh, all your birds are pretty.

Hello! I heard this is the Michigan forum, and being a Michigander, I figured I would come see this place.
I have a few questions, for whoever would like to answer, as I am new to chickens as a hatchling is new to the world. My dad raised hundreds of laying/meat production chickens every year when he was a kid, but we are now only going to have three to five laying hens.
As you know, winter is prepared to bear down on us, and those of us over in west MI get the lake effect snow...

... And I want to get some things to keep my hens warm. First, I would like to get a heated water dish. What are some good brands?
Are heat lamps or heating pads nessisary? How many?
thank you, for any future answers, because I dont want frozen chickens!

Good Morning everyone...Looks like it's going to be fairly decent out. I've have a lot on my agenda to do today & I'm keeping my finger crossed that I accomplish it all. My DH is sending me out to get stain for the my shed, my DD wants to go watch a college meet at the barn she rides at and we have 2 parties that we are expected to make an appearance at tonight and that's not to mentioning the things I need to do in between running!

Hillybilly Hen.......The way your poop boards are set up wouldn't work for me for I have double roosts (upper & lower) but I could rig something up below the bottom roost or have one on the floor. I think I recall someone using lids from rubber maid tubs....that might be an option. Thanks for posting the pics & giving me a visual to look at!!

If anyone has pics of their poop boards they'd like to share I'd appreciate it! Have a great day everyone!

Good morning crazycat and welcome to the michigan thread!

I live in da UP, so we know cold. I use one of the metal round heating stands and a galvanized waterer on top, works great.
You will hear other opinions, but I think as long a your coop is not drafty and your hens have plenty to eat and drink you do not need any added heat. The enemies of chickens in the winter are moisture and drafts, so they need fresh air without it being drafty. Heat in the coop just makes it harder for them to acclimate to the cold. Outside of the very coldest, windiest days the pop door is always open to the outdpoor run in my coop.

My dropping trays or poop boards were constructed from a material called RFP (reinforced fiberglass panel). It is available from Home Depot or Lowe's. I framed a square with 1x2, attached the panel, and suspended it with chain. Easy to remove, easy to clean, and you should be able to suspend them under each roost.
