After I first built my elevated coop I opened the door and leaned in one day and pressed my leg right up against a little bat that had squeezed up underneath the closed door. He, not unexpectedly, bit me. Poor little guy had to be submitted for rabies analysis. I put wooden strips and foam insulation strips around the door after that to prevent a reccurence.

I got some nice Partridge Rock chicks from Sandhill Preservation last spring. If you have not seen their catalog you should - they have more tomato varieties than I ever knew exhisted. They breed a lot of less common birds to preserve genetic varieties.

Long day at school yesterday and did not get home until 9:30 pm. The big girls were in the garage just fine but not in the coop part. The 2 BO's were squatted in milkcrates like they were nest boxes.
Anywho, I put them in the big coop and the BO's jumped up to the new nest boxes on the wall and waited for petting and treats. As far as I know they slept there all night.

When I finally woke up and went out to get the hens out it was after 10:00 am. The girls were waiting by the door and there was an egg in the new nest box. It's a medium so I'm thinking that it's probably from Broil who could not get to the box in the little coop. She is an early layer. I'm expecting an egg from Broast in the little coop now that they are out. If I only get 2 eggs today, I'll know that the BO's still aren't laying yet.

So what does all this rambling prose mean???

It's a marketing test for a new TV reality programme, "Waiting for Mrs. Goodhen". Crews follow various people as they overindulge their flocks and fret over when the first egg will be laid. Agressive filming of the tragedies of hawk attacks and the celebrations of that elusive first egg. We'll have chicken cam POVs, infra-red coop cams and even nest box cams with time lapse filming. There will be show within a show segments called "Chicken Idol" where roos compete for crowing contracts. The producers are working on DWTS segments (Dancin' with the Silkies) and "Roo Rehab" where Charlie Chicken has a meltdown then goes on a nationwide tour or to jail.

Been moving my supplies & grain into the shed. It's so nice to have some space of my own.....don't know how long I can keep it my own...ha,ha...I know my DH's wheels are turning. I need to get a little cabinet or something to put in there. Maybe I'll find a roadside treasure on my way to my aunts....she lives in Charlevoix and we plan on heading that way tomorrow.

Waiting for Mrs. Goodhen......now that would be something to watch.

Could this be the week of the Orpingtons?
I found an egg in the little coop a little while ago. It was tan and weighed in as an extra large. Bigger than what Broast lays. My buffs were going in and out all morning.

*whispers* Where is everyone? It's so quiet in here.

Andy -- Townline has a wonderful strain of ISAs. Their NH Reds are nice meaty, DP birds. Their CX strain is a nice one with few health problems, ime. I have never tried their BSLs but I would expect similar results. They also have a very nice staff and wonderful customer service. I would not hesitate in ordering from them.

Does anyone here raise Barnevelders?
