What a fantatic day in Northern Michigan.....Sunshine and sweatshirt weather. Took a ride along M119 and did a little antique hunting. We stopped to a local farm that we always frequent that sells fresh produce, homemade canned goods.....fruit perserves, marniades, salsa, honey....you name it they make it. My DD was checking out the chickens they had near the livestock barn and noticed that 2 of the Roosters they had jumped the fence. They weren't wondering far, just grazing in greener spots!

1muttsfan......sorry to hear about your chickens

LOL! Krisrose, those mystery fixes are the best. Unless you've already called a repair man and then you just look like an idiot when he gets there and there's nothing wrong. A couple years ago we were hit by lightening. It was the middle of summer and one of the things that quit working was the oven. I don't use it much when it's hot out so we didn't really get around to doing anything about it until this time of year. I finally called a repair man just before Thanksgiving. He came out, turned the oven on and it worked like nothing had ever been wrong.

Hasn't acted up since, either. Lucky for us it was a local guy with a sense of humor and he didn't even charge me a full service call -- just enough to cover his cost to drive out here and a little time. I hope your computer keeps on working like our oven has.

Go, Wildcats! Not an alum myself, but the DH is. He grew up in Marquette, his dad (now passed) was a professor in the NMU music department, and the DH did his undergrad degree there. The DH still has a brother and a sister living there, so we get up there with tolerable regularity. Very beautiful. Although I must admit, when we are driving up there in the middle of winter, I have been known to muse, "You know, if we only drove eight hours in the other direction...."

Do you have an idea what you might want to major in? More importantly, is there something you really love to do that you can only do in the winter? (Such as cross country or downhill skiing, ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing...) If so, Northern is a fabulous place to be.
Anyway, the DH loved it and he says if you have any questions, he'd be glad to answer them.

I think this question is for Krisrose and Chickflick? Did one of you say you put a ceramic heater in your coop? I just saw ceramic heaters at Target.
I wondered if that was the type you use and if so, how you secure it in your coop?
Also, do the chickens leave it alone and does it blow air on them?
It looked like you could set a thermostat and that it ran like a fan.
But the design was like a tower and I could just picture my pineshavings blowing around and the chickens perching on top of the heater.......or trying to.

I have 2 little pullets who are only 5 weeks old. Last night they began perching in the coop. I gave them an extra low and an extra wide perching board.
I have a 250 W red heat lamp above them and they sure like the set up.

No, we both have a flat panel heater that is very thin and hangs on the wall. It doesn't make the coop that much warmer, but have found chickens standing in front of it at times when they were cold. No blowing and warm to the touch.

Chickflick and myself use a flat panel heaters. It wont produce enough heat for chicks only 5 weeks old. You are better off to use the 250 watt bulb. If safty is a concern get a heatlamp from Premier1. They are worth the money. About 26 bucks.
I have never used the ceramic heaters but others have. Let me look for the thread.

Anyone else have a mixed flock that tends to segregate themselves?
My BSLs tend to roam at large during the day, but at night they roost together.
The 2 BO's stay close to each other all day long and sleep next to each other, but apart from the BSLs. All 4 were brooded together as chicks.

The 2 new girls from 1muttsfan, are cheek by jowl all day and night. Yet they seem to want to roam with the big girls during the day.

The only time that all 6 get together is when I go into the coop or run with treats.
