Olive - no he did not say what type of lights were used at all. Just that I should be very careful when choosing a light for animals.
I did just google teflon and florescent lights and some florescent lights do advertise a safety coating of teflon.
Maybe Nova can google if she can find some writing on the bulb.

Yeah, I'm definitely not questioning if there are coated fluorescents. For shop lights and the like coated fluorescents are handy, but just if you (or anyone) had actually heard of a case where fluorescents had caused a problem. Just doesn't seem to me like they get hot enough... of course no one would want to be the guinea pig to try that out either, so better safe than sorry I suppose.

When I went to get my 250W red heat lamp for my chicks to take into the coop with them, I read the box from every angle! It did say SHATTERPROOF but it was from the feed store and the box did not say teflon on it. Our vet said that the boxes that held the bulbs used at the zoo did say teflon but in very very small print. Sorry, I did not think to ask what type of bulbs they were but probably best that we check all our bulbs that might be used in a closed area with the chickens.

I will call around tomorrow to the landscape supply places. I'm thinking I'll just end up using regular straw. Right now I'm using hay but it's kind of expensive toilet paper for ducks!

Chicken Grandma, it's pine needles. I would imagine it would be less dusty than shavings. I use pine pellets in the chicken coop right now and I like them a lot but they aren't very cuddly.

Woo hoo! And it was the day I guessed, too!

Don't you just love getting a new egg from one of the girls? I got a new one today, too. My DD brought in the eggs the evening and there was a greenish/greyish one. Looks like my EE has decided to join the layers.
