I do the dry incubation, meaning NO water at all in the first 18 days, then I boost the humidity to mid-70s to 80s. It has works well for me.
Go chickies Go!!

Congrats sj3364!

I got a lot of things done today on my coop. I got the door done to the calve's pen, now it will be so much easier to bottle feed the calves. lol Also made a feed trough for them too.

I think that the roof support is 100 percent done, but my dad will have to check to see if it is good enough to withstand the snowload.

WOW, really?? don't eggs dry out in the incubator heat??

The eggs need to dry out a bit during incubation. The humidity is always around 20 to 25 percent, which is good. Too much humidity drowns the chicks, I had that issue too many times before I was told the dry incubation method.

I snuck out to the lean-to, and tried to get pictures. One move too close and Mama Hen makes a sound and all the babies go under her feathers- so this is the best I could get.
The Polish hang out in the lean-to, so they were fluttering overhead, convinced that I had come again to kill them for dinner.

Here's the best I could do:

Three of the 5 have skunk stripes, and one has the brown coloring of the Turken rooster.

And, just because I cannot resist-
a picture of my dog, Yogi, and one of my cats, Sushi,(the one the ducks were chewing up when she was a few days old out in the yard) ...and the look I get when I want to sit in my own chair...

Awww, Mom. The pic are great!! Adorable chicks! Your dog and cat are cute too. My dog has taken over my chair, also. He's a lap dog, so he'll get down so he can sit in my lap.

Welcome eggluvr! We're so glad to have you with us! We're a very chatty group, so don't miss a day! The MI Thread is kind of like a soap opera, something always happening to someone or someone's chickens. We have births, deaths, car accidents, college exams, baby bulls, unforgettable recipes, kids doing crazy stuff, spouses who don't understand chicken math, building projects, predator attacks, funny stories, sad stories, hunting stories, lots of pictures, questions about incubating, treating injuries, feeding, coops, chicken breeds and so much more. We need to come up with a good soap opera name for this thread like "As the Egg Turns". Any ideas?

I was gone most of the day so the chickens didn't get to free-range as they usually do. I got home at 4:45 p.m. and let them out just when they are usually putting themselves to bed. They were kind of confused, but glad to be out. They pecked around while I cleaned the coop and got clean water for them. I didn't have any treats so I looked in the pantry and found a bag of popcorn. I popped it and they loved it! Of course they had to fight the dogs for it, but they got enough. It was Smart Balance, low fat, low sodium, so not too unhealthy for them. They were out about 45 minutes when they decided it was time for bed and all went in.

I had to run to TSC for "grumbles" and on they way witnessed a car/deer accident. I was just coming up to an intersection and the light was green for me and the oncoming traffic. I noticed a movement just to the right and suddenly a doe shot through the tall phragmites, crossed my lane about two car lengths ahead of me and collided with a van coming toward me that was getting ready to make a right hand turn at the light. It was all in slow motion, as they say. The deer flew up into the air about 10 feet, windshield glass exploded all around, the van jolted to the side and the deer hit the pavement and slid toward my car. I had to brake and swerve to keep from running over it. Thank God the deer was killed instantly and was probably dead before it hit the ground. It made me just sick to see although there was no blood at all. I hate to witness animals hit by cars. I would have stopped but two cars immediately pulled over to see if the driver was OK, so I just kept going. TSC is right around the corner from where it happened, so I ran in, got my feed and was back at the intersection in under 10 minutes. The deer was already gone and two cop cars were pulled up by the van. I saw a guy in camouflage gear talking to the lady, so he probably took the deer for processing. Ruined my day.

She was around 44 pounds at 16 weeks old, which is a halfway mark of growth.

My dad did not want a big dog, but it looks like that she will be.

We got her when she was 10 weeks old.

She is Black Lab/German Shepard. I am working on her on not to eat the calve's droppings,

and thinking that the chickens are something to play with.

So far, she is being good with the poultry, but she likes their droppings.
