Boy now that's a picture.

Pork fat is heated slowly and the oil cooks off. You want to do it so that the oil doesn't get to hot or it will have a scorched taste and color. When the fat is cooled, it solidifies and becomes lard. Lard was what you had to use before vegetable shortening was invented.

Thanks for the lesson, Opa! I had the same question. Kind of like saving the bacon grease to cook my scrambled eggs in. Right? Only a lot less fat to deal with.

CAT....we'll be lard crazy! i have a roaster that will work well! and a crock pot and a stove and an oven....bring on the pork fat! yum yum!
 
vicki2x2- Did you get a PM from Chickflick?? We lost 5 of the bantams. Tried to bring them around with drops of vitamin/mineral water. No such luck

. Don't know what the problem was, chilled perhaps. I think considering the cold snap they were shipped in we are lucky thats all that was lost. They did ship extras.

I think from what I am reading that we will literally be rolling in it, lol. I think we are going to have a lot. We may have to start a new trend... lard rendering parties- better than Tupperware, lol.
 
Don't we have someone here breeding sensatopol I would like to send my best friend some eggs for her birthday she has always wanted them and her hubby will not let her spend money on eye candy the very practical man darn him

uh-oh...you may be next to visit for tasty treats and chicken chat! but warning, visiting my house may cause extreme chicken addiction and the need to eat more cinnamon rolls than any person should even know exist.
