Mom- our vet has a new machine. It is like an MRI for birds. He can see all the organs ect... I could ask him if he could zap your chick (for free) with that machine and we could see what is right and what is wrong with it internally. I don't know that he would agree to do it but he is a pretty compassionate person. I love that chick.... It is just adorable.
What breeds could the parents be?

Nova - thanks for the reassurance about the keet. I hope you are right. The older folks roll the cage with them around the lobby and sit with the birds all day. If I was those birds, I would be suicidal. I like the idea of putting a nest box in there for privacy. Wish I could find a place to take that pair of keet and turn them loose into a big aviary. Anyone have a big aviary?

Can you stuff your duck house with straw, so they can stand on some too and then block them in the doghouse full of straw? Just overnight? Gonna go to ZERO tonight.

Well, they didn't go out in the snow much today. They stayed in the winter run. Their coop is FULL of straw, and no snow in the run except where I go in and out, and they aren't allowed in that area. In fact, I put all fresh straw in yesterday in anticipation of our Lovely Michigan Weather! Today is just the first time I have ever seen them shiver until today. The poor little devils. I even put a wind block at the front of their coop, even though it faces into the winter run so they'd be able to keep more of their body heat in their coop. I am just a wimp too I guess. LOL. How ever could they have survived this long with out heat! LOL. I know. Mother nature... LOL. BUT STILL! They are shivering!

ANNND My velociraptor is pretty cute once you get used to it. lol

Your velociraptor is adorable!! Does it have a name yet? Those feet are great! I hope she does better with her balance.

OMG!! I have four babies! Mama did it!! The EE egg that someone added two days after Mama started setting has not hatched yet, but even if it doesn't, I'm 4 for 5!! I went out to give her some water and see if she would eat some grapes and soft bread and I heard peeping! As soon as I gave her the bread she started calling the chicks to come eat and they all poked their heads out to see what she had. I didn't have my camera with me so I ran back in to get it and these are the best pictures I could get. I'm SO geeked!! Four little black and yellow ones and one all yellow. And wouldn't you know that the one FBCM egg I gave her hatched

Congrats on the babies Chickmate. You called yourself a newbie and for some reason I thought you had done this all before. Being kind of new myself I don't know who the old timers are - besides Opa.

Good afternoon fellow Michiganders, Michiganians, etc, etc!!! Oh look the sun just came out! WOOT! Dang the snow is blinding! Got another inch of snow overnight up here in northeast LP added to the 7 inches we got the other day and the 5 inches a few days before that. The pups have just moved from their respective snooze spots to lay in it, gives me a few more minutes to finish this post before the puppy demands another walk.

I think it's Michiguineas. How far north are you swampducks? People say north and then tell me where and I think "that's not north. " I'm just below the bridge so you have to be a yooper to be farther north.

Earlier this week I put an old wash tub in the middle of the coop with sand, wood ashes and DE. The birds didn't have a clue what to think of it and wouldn't go near it. Today I found a Cochin in dust bathing and it was dusty! She wouldn't even come out when I was tossing treats.

I'm sure it will help with my never ending battle with the Northern Fowl Mites. My husband was talking to two old time farmers this week about my mite fight. They both said to put cedar boughs in the coop. Now I had been told not to put cedar shavings in the coop because it wasn't good for the chickens, but this is boughs. So what do you think? It would make the coop smell better, but it is closed up and I don't want to hurt the birds.

And.... I got 15 eggs today!

That's more than half the girls, finally.

LOL I am retired but who has time? I have less now than when I was working. And of course, the internet has really made things worse.

Nice to meet you, too. :)

Hi swamp ducks, nice to meet you

Trying to read all the posts since last April would be like reading War and Peace, you would have to be retired with lots of time on your hands

I would never hear the end of it if I didn't walk my dogs no matter what the weather! Third walk of the day the temps has already dropped to 14. It's 6.9 now.

and I'l be here all night thanking everyone for the warm welcome individually, so, THANKS Y'ALL!!!

I didn't even attempt to walk the dogs today!! The wind is WICKED! Just the walk to Kristin's house was brutal.

OOO I LIKE MIchiguineas!

You're further north than me, I'm a bit south of Alpena, But i figure north of Standish counts as up north. I think being that close to the bridge though makes you a real Troll and the rest of us Troll wannabes.

Wow, eggs. I won't have chicken eggs again till next winter probably. All my hens quit laying last summer and what the fox didn't get I got rid of. Was too depressing. Still got my guineas though and my pair of 'scovies. Momma is sitting on 13 eggs! Crazy lady is a couple months early.

Oh, and I ordered 25 chicks yesterday, be getting them first week of June. So far away!

Mom2, your baby is sweet

Have you tried putting vitamins in it's water? I had a chick get real wobbly and I read somewhere on here to give it some vitamin B complex crushed up in it's water. It helped her a lot.

I havent done Vit B- however, I DO have some. Its labeled for bearded dragons, so it should work for velociraptors, shouldn't it?

Not sure just what that critter is, but the perfect name for it would be BUD. (butt ugly bird)

Wouldn't it be "BUB" then? lol...

I didnt quote whomever asked me if I named it yet..
darn it..
Oh well-
It has many names..Little One, Beeper, Emu,
Beebee.."Stritch..

hahaha...whatever comes out of my mouth at the time.

I think I just helped it eat. Im holding my breath. That beak is curved like an Eagles. Or almost like a hookbills'.
It spends all its day eating but the crop is never full. So I really spent some time observing it- and almost all of the feed it grabs goes flying instead of down the hatch. I made a mash out of chicken feed for her- and she is pigging out. Its all going in, not flinging around. Probably the best meal this chick has ever had. :)
