UP TO FOUR! I went out to put every one away, and to carry Mr fluffers back to the coop. That turd was laying down in the garage like he belongs there. Lol. I also went to put treats for my super mom and the 3 babies were running around in the nest box, and Leila was pushing the next empty shell out of the way, the new baby was still wet, so.. 4 down one to go! I also turned the nest box over so the babies will be able to get to the food. Albeit, I am sure they wouldn't have a problem cuz Leila was busy pulling them out of the nest box before I flipped it over. I am a bad chick granny. I wanna touch em... A LOT. I am sure Leila would like too

YEAH~~~~~

fresh red blood droppings on the pine shavings below the roost. looked like to be one of her toe nails that was bleeding.
could've been pecking or nail breaking. Nothing big. just check and see if anyone's nails are getting too big?

As soon as I can get my socks off I'm going to check mine.

I trim my birds nails quite often. If they start becoming too long they often catch and break or tear out. Also if they become too long it can start to impede their walking. I would suggest using a Dremel tool with a drum sander. You are less apt to "quick" the bird, that is cutting into the blood vessel. Also the heat generated by sand causes the blood vessel to contract and it can to a lesser degree cauterize the vein.

I strongly advise keeping not only the spurs on your rooster trimmed, but the nails as well. If you watch a rooster breed a hen he will hold her head by her feathers and then stand on her back. He is constantly jostling for position. Most of the "rooster wear" inflicted upon hens is caused by the toenails not the spurs. If you blunt his toenails you will substantially reduce injuries.

farmgirl_09 Welcome to the Michigan thread. I'm sure you will enjoy being among so many friendly and helpful people. Be sure to check the link in my signature line for information about our upcoming Chickenstock.
Miss Jayne hasn't be on here in quite some time. A much better person to contact would be Ooopsy Daisy. She lives south of your and buy her feed at a custom mill just south of Lapeer for an incredible price

That's what my kids say, too, when I post funny pictures of them with the chickens.

YAY!

Got home from work & there was chicken gifts by the door, and on the walk way, Was glad DH thought to let the hens out, they love this weather, ....Me Too!!
Yep. Same here. Had to watch where I stepped because the bantams had a lovely time on the side deck.

Well maybe these uggos aren't so dim afterall.

After coming home from school, I went out to check the coop and the 2 new chicks are nowhere to be seen. So I turned on all the garage lights and find evidence of a breakout. "Somebody" pushed out a loose piece of lattice that was just big enough for 2 little ones to leave the partitioned coop.

I figure no big deal, they are still in the garage somewhere, hiding among the clutter. Then I hear a dog whine and a chicken squawk outside! Sure enough, my golden retriever has found one of the lostlings. Run out and catch her right away and take her back to the coop. Put the dogs in the house and grab a flashlight to look for the other escapee. Start calling for her, like I do the big girls and she comes out from under the trailer but not close enough to grab. Just stands there giving me the stink eye. Back into the garage I go for the fish net. Caught her with no problem and into the coop we go. Put her on the work bench and she struts down to the other end, joins the other uggo and eats and drinks like they just had a grand adventure. Neither one seems to care that they gave me quite a scare.

Now I just have to figure out how they escaped from the garage and got in to the main yard. Tomorrow's day light project.

I'll check on them again right after Glee.

Ha Ha!

I let the flock out this morning and about an hour later noticed a large red-tailed hawk circling over the woods. He landed in a tree further back but we could hear him screeching off and on. Later in the afternoon he was across the street in the gravel pit and the ducks over there were raising a ruckus.

I opened the pen so Mama and the babies could come out while the others were in the front yard and she took them out the coop door around the corner into the run door and back into the coop via the pop door. One big circle for their first time out. They looked a little wary of being in the big open out-of-doors but they follow Mama wherever she goes. The other chickens came back and I decided to see what they would do with the chicks, so I just left them out. I had grapes for everyone and some scratch so they were more interested in the treats than the babies. They just mingled all together eating and pretty much ignored the chicks. Worf, my EE roo went into Mama's nest box and started making a nest and noises for someone to get the heck in there and lay an egg and Joe, my BR roo gave them the stink eye but didn't try to hurt them. The chicks got mixed up for just a second and started following the other barred rock who is Mama's sister. Too funny. Mama clucked at them and they scurried right back to her. They are getting big already with little feathers poking out of the fuzz.

This morning when the snow was still a few inches deep I found fox tracks coming out of the woods, going all around the coop, then under the deck and out the other side and back into the woods on the other side of the property. They know the chickens are in there but can't get at 'em!

RaZ, I'm sending your spread sheet for this month's egg count tonight.

Uggos were fine after their outdoor adventure. Went out to check and the only problem was waking up the flock when I turned on the garage lights. Got stink eye from everyone.

OK here's a couple of pics, might have to zoom in to get a close look of the feet....They're dirty from being in the wet yard all afternoon. I think they are way too long. I wish mine grew like like that..lol. It has to be from all that spinach & yogurt I give them!!
They free range all the time, they're always in the landscaping (back & front)picking through the stones, and on the driveway.
Maybe I should paint them instead!!

Dragon Nails on a Chicken!!

I forgot to mention that I got a whopper egg today from Extra Crispy, my BO. It was 80 grams (2.82 oz.)

Congrats Raz...that's a good sized egg!

Does anyone know if there is a easier/quicker way to access your Home Page other than going into your profile and scrolling through your recent activities. On the old form they had a Header for it which made it a breeze to get to.
