thanks Olive. Its chirping in my shirt. Lol I am going to slip I. Under skeeter when I go to work I think.. If it hatches, I will try putting it back under Leila. If that doesn't work, I have a nice big brooder light.

Also, it think this one is the egg I put in last, 2 days after the others, the day buffy met with the hawk...

So guess what I'll be doing this weekend.

Opa if you or anyone else has any advice or tips on doing this it 'd be greatly appreciated.
I've given numerous manicures in my time but never to a chicken!!

When you look at their nails you usually can see the blood vessel. Normally it is about 1/2 the length of the nail. You'll want to grind it off just shy of that. Always makes sure the nail is blunted with the edges slightly rounded. The more often nails are treated this way the closer to the foot the blood vessel will be.

Opa - Should I be spraying my fruit trees right now with oil since it's nice and warm for a few days?
Now would be an ideal time to treat your fruit trees with any pre-emergent spray such as volck oil spray. This treats for overwintering bugs and their eggs.

I hope it hatches while you are at work!

Ok... That was so weird, but so cool. I was super happy to hear it chirping. YAY! ITS ALIIIIVE! Then all the sudden, about an hour after its been in my shirt and chirping, IT PIPS! That was weird to feel. SO, double YAY! I waited till it had a good size hole in it, checked on Leila, and she's back in the nestbox with the babies, so I shoved it under her, and she pushed it into a more comfy spot still under her! I am hoping she stays put till its out this time. Totally freaked me out though. I mean, its BUFFY'S BABY! Lol.

I am a freak.

I probably need counciling.

I will not get that here.

You guys, well most of you guys would just encourage this nonsensical behavior.

Wow, Nova. I would've thought the same way Olive did. Good call on tucking it in your shirt. I have to say I got a good chuckle out of that and DH thought you were crazy, but admitted he could see me doing that, too. He thinks I'm a bit goofy about my chooks.

Good luck on the little one hatching out all the way today.
And kudos to you for refusing to give up on it.

Nova - that is so incredible, I hope it hatches completely and is healthy. SO exciting!

It was a feeding frenzy in the coop.

Bought a fresh bag of meal worms last night since I've been out for a week or two. Once the Uggos tried it, they were hooked too. Let the training begin.

On the subject of feeding, of the orgainc feeds I bought a few weeks ago, I found that the chickens have no interest at all in the spelt. Nor do the wild birds, squirrels or other critters that visit. However the oats seem to be a hit. But still the big girls like snacking on the Uggos' chick feed.

Oddly enough, my homework project is showing a downward trend of egg production that started at the same time I changed feed and ran out of mealworms. Hmm.

Go away for a coule of days and it takes forever to catch up.

Mom2, so sorry about little Beeper. I know you did all that you could and gave her a wonderful little life.

Nova, congrats on the hatch. Good luck with the new bra baby.

Welcome new members. Farmgirl, looks like you already have the chicken math figured out.

uchytyl, I did not realize you were so close to me. We also get feed from Fremont co op.

One of the problems with feeding whole or cracked grains instead of a feed that is processed is that the birds pick and choose what they want, which usually leads to an unbalanced ration, as well as wasted $. Kind of like kids if you let them eat what they want.
