Lard goes back for centuries, seems we all just quit using it with these new "lard free" hogs the industry has been promoting since the 60's. Mom and grandma always had a can of lard in the kitchen.

I guess it is a good thing, but a little lard ain't gonna hurt....much.....I think.

Steve, look at this: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9400E2D6143EF931A2575BC0A9639C8B63&sec=health&spon=&pagewanted=all
"..I
have a suggestion for those Old World cooks who are wrestling with New World advice: take another look at the fat profile of lard. It has half the level of saturated fat of palm kernel oil (about 80 percent saturated fat) or coconut oil (about 85 percent) and its approximately 40 percent saturated fat is lower than butter's nearly 60 percent. Today's miracle, olive oil, is much lower in saturated fat, as everyone knows, but it does have some: about 13 percent. As for monounsaturated fat, the current savior, olive oil contains a saintly 74 percent, yes. But scorned lard contains a very respectable 45 percent monounsaturated fat -- double butter's paltry 23 or so percent.

As with all dietary advice, the fat of the day will change. But eternal truths will remain: food is always best with little or no processing and eaten as close as possible to where it is grown. This goes for lard, too. The artisan pig farmers whose fortunes have been revived by a new market for pork with real flavor should look into selling lard because the supermarket kind is processed and dismal. And Dr. Frieden's request may produce a burgeoning metropolitan market."

Might be a market for it!

Here is the plan, get up and on the road by 8:00 a.m.... arrive between 10-10:30... admire MJ's cute coops and happy turkeys gobbling at you, step into the front door and be greeted by fresh bread smell and chicken soup bubbling, and lots of peeping. MJ's smile is even nicer in real life. Her kids are the best. (Hopefully there will be a few of us there as well ) Gab, gab, gab, eat, gab, go see all her pretty hens and turkeys. At some point go buy your gas money chicken feed, lol. Leave by 2, home by 5.... Drive through Little Ceaser's for 2 5 dollar pizzas.. Unload your car and kids, remove all chicks from your children's pockets... A great day and good memories! The only hard part will be unloading 100 lbs of feed!

oh my gosh! too hilarious! those are the basic directions though, i think! ha ha!

CAT's family is awesome too! and they ALL have gorgeous smiles! if there was a power outage, we could have them all smile and light up the night!

Lauren the fastest way to turn someone that is being mean around is to pray for them. I will pray for these girls as well as you. Hang in there hunny this is a life lesson, and life lesson's are not fun at all. Be the bigger person, and don't let them know they have hurt you. Kind of like not letting an animal know you are afraid of them.

Hey all. Just checking in for the last time in awhile. 4 am is coming early, and I've got a plane to catch. I hope to check in while I'm there, but don't know if I'll be able to or not. We'll be in Cozumel, Mexico and hope to take lots of pictures. You all behave, I'll miss being around.

Have fun be safe! Be prepared for people trying to sell you stuff constantly. We had a good time when we went.

If you get the chance, have a beer and a sandwich at Guido's.

Good morning everyone. I haven't been on since thursday; I'm sure I've got plenty to catch up on. Yesterday was a beautiful day from what I could see of it. Had to work 10 hours -- yuck! My chicken run is officially a pond at the moment. I have to buy some galoshes just to get in there. My ducks are happy though.

Morning All-

Well I got the Dom trio ready to go and my two little mutt roos. I am sad to see 5 chickens go, but that means more room for new ones, right!?!!

Can't wait to meet Crystal today! I forgot to ask are you bringing your kiddos? They are more than welcome!
