Oh, and Chicken Grandma... I have caught Miss Veena and put her in the cat carrier. I can not get her to eat the oiled bread... And I can not pull her wattle down and get oil in her that way, cuz she's a fighter.... She is really ticked off at me right now. AND everyone here is chicken of the chicken, so no one will hold her. Carl and Earlene weren't home, or I would have asked one of them to help me hold while I lubed. Oh well. SO, I have her in the carrier, in the garage, with a dish of oil and yogurt. HEEHEE. I have massaged her crop, it feels much looser now in comparrison to this morning. YAY! I will massage it again tonight when I shut off the garage light. I am pretty sure she laid an egg today after all. Least ways, I got one in the color that she lays. She laid a medium tan egg, and the other 2 dottes lay a light tan color. So, poor girl, cropped up and laid an egg. LOL. She's having a day.

I have already decided to call Dr. Bader in the morning if she is still knotted up. I am comforted that I have a vet that deals with chickens and can do this surgery if I need. I hope I do not need to. I wonder why she got impacted... Oh well... maybe she ate some straw... Never know with chickens. LOL.

Also, I opened the chuckles coop up this afternoon so they could view the world outside. I was surprised at how warm that heat light is keeping the coop. They have discovered the roosts. They are huddling together at night even with the lamp, so I think with the exposure during the day to the outside temps, they should be able to move to the 150 watt bulb in the next few weeks... then the 100 watt. Gonna ween them off of it so they don't get the shock of not having it all the sudden in the middle of winter. Nothing like going from a 66 degree basement to 36 degree outside and upper 20's at night... But they seem happy enough in their new home.

I am going to get picks of the chickies tomorrow. Skeeter is getting better about me picking her up off the babies and setting her to the side so I can get them. She doesn' attack my hand anymore, but she does grumble still. I almost caught a pick of all 5 in the food dish today, but the light wasn't good enough, and I don't want to use the flash. Supposed to be sunnier tomorrow.

I got my green rose
(Not as exciting as a chick, but i really wanted this)

Can't buy from here, but these are sometimes the ones in the grocery store (the 4" or 6" roses)

http://kansasgardenmusings.blogspot.com/2010/09/green-rose-surprise.html
this is the one i wanted the most, but on the aldershot site it looked more like the one i have, so i'm crossing my fingers....... What i found neatest is that these are actually 4' rose plants, no true mini's and that according to this person actually survived a zone 5 winter with no protection!!! So if anyone is wanting a "starter" rose, look for the "victory" roses at the stores! They are actually "shrub" roses and are supposed to be waaaay easier than the typical rose to keep alive! (we will see cause i'm definitly not a true green thumb)
congrats on finding your rose, I have a # of roses got most of them from cuttings from an elderly friend. I through them in the ground and they grow, never do anything special for winter. I always figured it was her stock that is so old and healthy.good luck with yours hope it grows well

A while back I offended some of you by suggesting that the filing (or not) of a Schedule F may play a role in whether or not one is a "farmer" for the purposes of legal protection under farm protection legislation. I'd like to make up for the offense I may have caused so today, I'm working on our farm taxes and would like to invite anyone who is so inclined to come help.

Nova, if your Veena has not been able to eat today, you may want to put her carrier inside the house for warmth. Chickens have a hard time surviving an impacted crop.. All the time people spend pouring oil into chickens and massaging their crops is time that the birds are not getting food in and they are going to burn fat to stay warm, So you have a bird that is going to lose weight very quickly and often they cannot recover from that.

Often it is grass or hay in the crop. That is not very easy to break up and move through the crop with oil or massage. Bread contributes to a yeast overgrowth in the crop. To avoid massive weight loss and infection, some chicken owners respond quickly to a crop bound chicken and cut and pull the hay out pronto and then stitch and put the chickens on antibiotics and a soft syringe fed diet, because even after the crop is cleared, the chickens usually do not return to eating on their own..But quick action is required to save the chicken. I know your vet is closed but I would keep her indoors so that she does not burn precious calories trying to stay warm tonight. And I would get help for her tomorrow if she does not eat or I would consider culling her to spare her a slow agonizing death. I have followed many BYCer's threads where they spend a lot of time trying to clear the crop and the chicken slowly dies. Sometimes infections occur from the backed up food and bread they put in the chicken and sometimes the chicken just cannot recover from the weight/heat loss. Good luck!

Well, as I said, she was out scratching and picking around for bugs. She did eat a little bit today. The ball that she had this morning is not as hard as it was. I have massaged her 3 times already today. I have her in the garage in the carrier. It keeps pretty warm in there when the door is closed. It has an exhaust vent that blows warm air in there all the time. SO, not so bad in there. I am gonna be checking her again here in a little bit. Massage that crop again. I am hoping that I did catch it early enough. It was a small ball, so... Thanks you though for your advice. I really really do appreciate it. It is valued.

Lots of nice looking pics today!

M.sue- good job with the trimming. You and DH make it look so easy.
Babigyrl- yes, I'd say those eggs are fertile.
Taprock- congrats on the hatch. Such cute little chicks.
Nova- hope Veena's crop gets better.

Mmmm. I just made some banana bread and my house smells so yummy! Better go get some before DH eats it all. He's like a Hoover vacuum when it comes to baked goods.

Richard Dean Anderson played Colonel Jack O'Neill for almost 10 years on Stargate SG-1, I heard he quit to hang out with his daughter. I'm sure he could be googled.

He also played Dr. Jeff Weber on the soap opera - General Hospital.....that was before he became Mcguyver.
