Hey all - Last year I had MICE eating my tomatoes. This year I was thinking of hanging the tomato plants off the back porch awning in containers to avoid the problem. Will that work? What do you all think?
That should work but you'll have to watch so they don't dry out quick. My flowers in bags on my porch do great but I have to water them a little bit more!

I've been down in the barn since 8 this morning, taking care of the horses and getting a few chores done. My toes finally got cold so I had to take a break. Coffee really hit the spot this afternoon. This is the first time this winter I actually got a little cold (I am so appreciative or our weather so far). When I used to live in the city I used to always plow the two neighbor ladies out all winter long and my neighbor did the 2 widows across the street. My ex-wife used to always b**** at me for wasting gas on the lady next door as she was probably the worst neighbor ever. I always told her it was not up to me to make that decision. As long as I had the blower and the gas I would keep doing it. Aside from that, the city had an ordinance that all sidewalks had to be cleared so the kids could walk to school (I was between an Elementary and a Middle School).

Sorry RaZ.

I am so glad I'm in the country. I don't plow until 4" since I have a truck. I haven't plowed once this winter (knock on wood).

I hope that you did not just 'curse' yourself.

When those Topsy-Turvy planters first came out, I thought it was a great idea. After 2 years of using them, I decided that the tomato plants didn't do so well growing upside down. They dry out way too fast, even when watered twice or more per day. Last year I used deep plastic pots which helped keep the soil moisture more consistent. You can still hang them from the porch or patio.

I think this year I'll do some hay bale gardens and mix some veggies in with the flowers.

I found a great book called "The Vegetable Gardener's Container Bible" by Edward C. Smith. This guy breaks it all down, how to build your own self watering planters, the right mixes, organics, by certain bugs to control other bugs, I used it last year, had nice success with it and am doing bigger this year. It was very nice when it came to weeding. Hardly any. Anyway, I picked the book up at Barnes and Nobles, but I am sure they have it at that other store... Um.... Borders. Should check it out Chicken Grandma... I used a self watering to grow my tomato plants in. Worked great. I have 5 gallon pails to make a few more this year to try the peppers in. And the nice thing, I can move them when I need to maximize the sun light. Heck RaZ, I think you might like to check this out as well. The author even has a large variety of vegetables in the book, and the best way to grow them in pots.

Anyone interested in this book should check out this site http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/Sea...egetable+Gardener's+Container+Bible&x=63&y=13

I like family farm and home. They are the ones that carry the Kent food i am trying.

But when it comes to cake... I don't do it. Lack of control I love cake...LOVE CAKE!
Bwa ha ha ha. After all this talk of food i just had to make a cake. chocolate specifically.

I wanted to share the recipe, but i want if PERFECT before i do. One more tweak.... it is a "box mix" recipe. All you gotta do is measure and stir. Just wasn't chocolaty enough just yet. OOps. edited to add that this is a recipe that imitates a box mix. Not a recipe using a box mix.

Hillbilly Hen Ok. i'll have to do some digging through my stuff and find that info.
