I have always heard that pullets get tail feathers first. Wether this is true or not I don't know but that is one thing I go on and mine has been right on.

Either way isn't good. They hatched on the 5th. My two favorite have tail feathers the other three don't. The problem is they are all different breeds so I can't compare.

Kimmie - my Standard Cochin's lay brown eggs but they are so tiny they are almost the same size as my bantam eggs. I'm not sure if that is normal or not, but they don't get my egg laying recommendation.

I gave in and emailed an order for hatching eggs. I will end up missing the Easter hatch but that's ok because I don't want to wait that long!

I have always heard that the girls feather out faster too.

Raz, they are not ugly beasts, just beautifically challenged. As for the will power, since I currently have no energy due to a lovely sinus cold that developed yesterday that is not a problem for me right now. To my other resisters, while highly effective, I do not recommend using this tactic to resist.

So that's what you call it now.

No I did not try to sex them. I don't know how.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!!!!!!! I am soooooo happy to have been invited to the group. I don't know what kind of chickens to get, what I want are brown egg layers that are on the friendly side. I don't know if I should get day old or ones already started. Please help me with advice, all is welcome because I am a newbie for sure. Does anyone know where I ought to get them? My local elevator orders from a hatchery here in Michigan Zeeland I think.

Kimmie

Delawares are in your face friendly [also in your lap, pull on your pants leg etc..] Black Austrolorps are friendly too, and both of these have laid well for me throughout the winter. Where are you locted? Sometimes you can order some from folks on here.

Anyone tired of chick pics, or can I spam ya'll with some Araucana chick pics soon when they start hatching? Three out of my six eggs from an AWESOME breeder have pipped! So excited!

I will have to check the wing feathers. Maybe then, I will be able to tell little cripple toes gender then... BUT, I have several roos to look at and see in comparrison to their matching siblings.

I got a scare tonight. I could not find Vanna. It was already dark out, so all the chicken should have been in their coops or the garage... I brought out some left over egg noodles for the big coop and no Vanna. I didn't see her in the garage either when I went thru either. Just Roger and Fiametta. Roger was trying to help Fia find a spot to lay her egg. She didn't use the dog coop outside today. So he's building her a nest, making this hurrrrrrr noise. So sweet. Well, anyway, no Vanna. Where the double hockey sticks... So, I am thinking I am going to have to get the flashlight and go on the hunt. I mean, she's one of my best girls. Ok, I admit, they are all my best... They are PWB's after all. So I go back in the garage after the big coop close up, because I am hearing this super weird noise. That darn silly bird is on the garage door. She managed to get the ceiling light to fall half off, and IT IS A RECESS LIGHT! So, she's walking on the part of the garage door that is up. How the heck she got up there, I haven't a clue. She normally perches on the rails for the garage when the door is closed, but it was open! So, I don't know how she got up there, especially since her way to get on the rails was blocked by the garage door. Needless to say, she finally got off the door, and now I have wad of chicken parcel on the top panel of the door. So nice...
