Since my beard had come in a grizzled grey & white making me look like an old goat I though shaving might make me look a little younger. Maybe I shaved too much.

snowflake - i live near there, is it in the strip mall area there?
it is at the end in a separate building on the south side of the st. I think the sign by the drive said Mullers? They only have a small sign on the building. I think the address is 4700 14mile

Ya'll do know there's 2 weeks to chick days, right?!

Is that at TSC? I try to stay away when that happens so I don't come home with any stowaways It is not good to work at the PO cause Farm & Home orders out of our branch and they get order after order of those cute little critters and they cheep and distract me all morning.

I would take both of them if it wasn't for the fact that I'm pretty sure by the time they are full grown they probably look something like this.

I think it was Hillbilly Hen who says that at a certain age you might think you've lost your mind but the reality is that you just can't remember where you left it.

I still like your avatar, you must have been about 2or3

Where are you Mom? Are you downriver? I would have loved to stop to see you. I had a friend ride along with me, but still would have taken the time to stop.

My babies all run from me too. Mama is not afraid of me, but when the big huge muck boots come stomping she tells them to hide!! I'm going to work on getting them tamer with treats so I can catch them to do nails, etc.

I have four chicks that are 29 days old today. Two of them have big feet and legs, their combs are turning red already and their little tail feathers are much longer than the other two chick's. The one little guy is so obviously a rooster and the spittin' image of his daddy Joe, I've named him Little Joe (Bonanza!) The other little roo is black with speckles and I think Joe is also his daddy. The other two I'm pretty sure are pullets. Here's Mama with her two boys.

so sweet!!

Kimmie - French Black Copper Marans lay beautiful dark brown eggs like this. ISA Browns are quite prolific layers of medium brown large round eggs. Barred Rocks lay a lighter brown/tan egg but are not great layers like the ISAs. You'll have fun deciding which breeds you want to keep and waiting for your first eggs!

Love the pic. they are such a pretty color.

I gotta know: when you look at the wing feathers, do some of them have 2-3 really long ones at the wingtip??? I was told that's how you sex them at that age, and i have been dying to know if it was accurate at all or if he was full of hooey. If you get goats beware the boys. I won't feed ours, and they're fixed. you wouldn't know it by the things they do. They also bash me in the knees to try to get me to drop the feedbucket. And every bit of shrubbery/flowers/trees/trash will be eaten. Note the twin evil smiles:

Did you know there are also kinds that lay large green and blue eggs too? I think there's also cochins and silkies that lay light brown eggs? It all depends really if you need the eggs to sell, or if you just like them. There are quite a few kinds that lay brown eggs, but some produce more eggs than others. Some are better with free ranging, and some don't mind being penned. Sooooo many choices! Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions! Whatever you do build bigger than you need. See all the cute chicks? It's called "chicken math" and it happens every spring! (resisting the urge to buy chicks is rather like trying to eat just one chip)

love your goat, do you have to brush them like cats or dogs with such long hair so they don't get matted?

just like that it happens. You know Kimmie you really need at least 3or4 different colors of egg layers that way you can decide which ones you like best. And you can never decide which ones you like best. some one will post a pic of another breed and your want some of those too

Yep, at TSC. Family Farm & Home does theirs around the same time though.

According to the flier TSC sent me with our year-end report most stores will have chicks by March 4th.

Taprock, I found a thread of Michigan members, probably incomplete and a little dated, but also have not been able to find the BYC member list. I submitted a question asking if it was still around somewhere, so hopefully will find that out soon. Here is the link to the Michigan membership thread -

Hey! There are a whole bunch of new Kent County Folks who need to add themselves to this list! I'll be the first - please join me in adding your name to this list!

chicken grandma, I believe snowflake said she signed up for that workshop. She's looking to carpool, too, so you should get with her.

I'm currently undecided about it.

ok...I'm hoping I'll be able to figure this new forum setup out....have I mentioned I hate change? ;) cause I do lol
I have a hatch due soon of Silkies and need a quick refresher course to make sure my brain isn't remembering the wrong thing. What humidity should these guys been at through incubation and what humidity level should it be at during hatching. I'm thinking 40% during incubation and then bump it to 60+ % during lock-down/hatching time right? I'm excited to see what I get because we have white, blue, black and splash...and a couple showgirls too :)

This is our showgirl we hatched out last year...the poof is a little dirty but it's so darn cute! :)
