Question about Bantams: How often do they lay eggs? My little bantam hen is 10 months old and has only delivered a total of 6-8 eggs. All laid when she was very young ...approx. at 4-5 months old. Not another egg from her since. She's happy & healthy.

I can't help with your question, but I have two bantam girls and I haven't seen an egg yet from either of them. They are @ 10 months old right now.

I was out with the chickens and went to pull some grass from around a small bush. I've has carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists. On my righy hand, I've had four fingers fixed. Pinkie does not get "it". left hand, had 3 done. I've had mine done in hospitals. Be lot cheaper in drs office.

Sorry about your finger, hope it heals fast. I have carpal tunnel on both wrists, had it for a year. I am trying to avoid surgery, I have to wear braces, but hate them, but hate the pain more. Hope everyone gets better from the cold, had one started on Friday last week, but its gone now! That got to be the shortest cold that I have ever had! Must be all that fresh air while doing spring cleaning the backyard. BTW, the backyard looks like a junkyard, it does needs cleaning, its so bad that I can see everything in the backyard 1 mile up in space from google earth. So embarrassing

Raz- in my PO, the second those babies come off the delivery truck, you get a call. Nothing like a good 5am wake up call.

And yes, telling about your soon to be arrivals is greatly appreciated.

Which reminds me...we had babies come through Tuesday morning waiting for pick-up.

My buddy had 3, their names were Thanksgiving, Christmas and Lucky. Lucky got to go live on the farm down in Florida, along with that house-crashing bull calf.

That same friend has pea-fowl and I love those birds. No way I could have a peacock in the burbs.

Thanks! I do have a problem though...I have two chicks who aren't walking too upright. It's weird....I thought maybe splay legged but thier legs are under them but they don't want to stand up all the way and do a funny wobble crawl. I'm wondering if it has to do with how smooshed they were in the egg? They both made it out of the shell by themselves and seem to be bright eyed and bushy tailed but just won't get up off their belly to walk!? I bandaided both of them just in case that might help if it is splay...maybe just a mild case or something.

M2M - that yellow chick looks like it needs to be named Chunk and I agree with teeville, it does not look happy.

msue - I have two bantam girls, a salmon faverolle and a sizzle. One started laying at about 6 months and is pretty routine, almost every day. The other is 8 1/2 months and has shown no sign of starting to lay.

What kinds of foods do you feed your broody hens? I've only made her scrambled egg and cottage cheese. I do also have feed and scratch for her in the corner of her nest box. I also offer her water a couple times a day even though it's there for her anytime she wants to leave the nest.

Final count- seventeen! I also got a zillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllliiiiiiiiiiooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnn eggs in the mail today from Theron!!!!!!!!!!

AND I have to tell you....those brown eggs he sent me are the BIGGEST eggs I have ever ever seen from a chicken. HUGE..I think he is pulling a fast one on me and sent me goose eggs.

I loaded my incubator full...and I had NO choice- I stuck the showgirl eggs under the silkie. They will hatch in nine days. I put the d'uccle eggs under the sizzle....minus two. Two of them went into my incubator, and then I crammed that 'bator FULL of these giant eggs from him, along with five blue ones.

Thank you thank you thank you Theron- however, i really think I must owe you money. SOOO many eggs. BEAUTIFUL packaging, not a single egg broken- I think I could have dropped each egg package onto the floor and nothing would have broken.

However, if I hatch out an ostrich or a goose, you will definitely be hearing about it. And if not, my goodness- give those hens a sitz bath...their bottoms must be sore!!!
So. starting the count from tomorrow, I expect eggs to hatch on March 16th. St Pattys day babies.

You owe me no money whatsoever. DON'T worry about hatching an ostrich or goose. Our geese are not laying yet and we have NO room for ostriches. Our chickens are starting to lay pretty good sized eggs. More room for the baby to grow. The breeds include BCM, OE, EE, BSL, RIR, RSL, DEL, BO, WO, Polish, BA, BR, and a few mutts. Hope you get some colorful birds.

Talking about egg sizes, I've been checking my egg production and while it has dropped some from last month, the average size has gotten bigger. The mean, median and standard deviation have all increased.

Looks like my nerd feathers are showing.
