Well, Olive, I think as a parent, you were very contiencious (SP? hope you know that word I am meaning). Your child was hydrating. I realise that over hydrating can cause cramping as well. I do know at marathons, triathalons and such, gatoraide or those types of refreshments are provided. And even though I do not know you, I do get the distinct impression that if you felt that your daughter was in medical danger, you would have not let her finish. This little girl I am talking on, she was FORCED. There in for me, lays the difference. I realise at sporting events, practices, ect, these things happen, and those are horrible accidents. But to force a child to run until she drops... Thats different. If I think about it, I am sure that the step mother and the grandmother did not intend for this child to die. Common sense however did not prevail in this case with these to women, who should have known better. I don't know. I am just angry at the punishment that led to a death of a child. OVER A CANDY BAR AND A LIE!

So how many of us here have had CPR and first aid training? Those with little children, do you know infant CPR?

Yeah, this was definitely an extreme case. I just wonder where do we draw the line?

Coaches often use physical punishment for poor performance on higher level sports teams. Accidents do happen.

At these races I see parents pushing their kids to perform. I can't believe any of them would want their kid to be hurt, but accidents happen.

I wonder what the background of the women is. I know growing up in sports and such there was a predominant school of thought that if you weren't puking or passed out you could still work harder. I still struggle with that mentality with myself to this day. And I'm far from an athlete these days. And sometimes it comes on quickly. Two weeks ago I almost passed out while lifting. Came on out of no where, suddenly I was just VERY, VERY light headed.

At any rate, this case is absurd. Three hours is CRAZY. Just gets me thinking, I guess... where's the line? What's too much, what's not? This one is easy to say too much, but some cases might be very iffy... and then what? Hate to see people sitting in prison when the guilt alone would be devastating in those less black and white cases.
