Raz - Congrats on the new chickies! How many does that make it now? I was in FFH today (twice) and I also talked to a lady about chickens and told her about our forum. :) I did resist the BO again....they are sooo cute though

I bought my rescue a Thunder Shirt today. We are going to be diligent about trainer her on it. I don't want to go through another spring storm season drugging her. Pray that it works!

Sigh. Well, i'm reduced to being a stalker. sigh. i have been checking every evening to see if TSC over here gets any more banties. They said in a few days, but i wanna be there first, lol. So for the de'uncles, is the greyish lemon the color of chicks the mille fleur pattern, or the other color? ( i can't remember what the other was )

Grey would be the porceiline d'uccle and our Bobbi was yellow with a beard and pouffy cheeks when she was a chick. She ended up being a mille fleur. Get a bunch of them. They don't seem to survive long. Everyone posted about their d'uccle in the past tense........

NovaAman - Thanks for your reply. These will be between 8 - 10 weeks old, so they will not be going in a brooder. Did you get yours from Destiny Farm?

Juise,

welcome

I would keep them separate for at least 2 wks and then introduce them slowly in a run next to the others as Nova suggested.

I feel like I am such a bad chicken mama! The snow is starting here, so I went and closed up the chooks early. I did a quick glance to check and make sure everyone was in. I thought I saw everyone! NOPE! I came back inside, and before long the beagle mix is barking at the front door! Lo and behold, my rooster Abe was tapping on the glass at beak level! He literally looked like he was saying "What the heck, lady?! You locked me out!"

He had no qualms about me scooping him up and bringing him inside the house until I could get snow boots on to bring him back to the coop. In fact, I am sure he would have happily spent the night with me!

I am just flabbergasted that he went to the front door. It isn't much of a wind break, not at all sheltered, so there isn't much of a reason for him to be there in the snow and wind. Unless he knew humans come too and fro out that door sometimes?

Alright my friends... I have a new problem... Skeeter and her other 2 babies are roosting! How am I supposed to put this little lady under her if she is roosting?
have fun with that.... next to will have to do. glad she is doing so well

have you seen all the tornados on TV... very, very sad for those people

the guy I get my feed from doesn't have chicks... I stay away from TSC and FFH. what I get on line and here is bad enough...

The grey/lemon is Porcelain.

ETA: Mille Fleur are Black and gold.

Olive, our mille fleur Bobbi was all yellow as a chick. Then went reddish as you can see in her photo at 6 months and then later got the black/white and gold flecks. Amazing to watch.

Snowflake - my daughter was planning to drive to Kentucky today with friends for Spring Break. Then on to Florida tomorrow. I called a mom near the college and she took the kids in for tonight and got them to stop, watch the news and reschedule the drive for tomorrow. It was a miracle that I heard about the tornado warnings. I am so glad I called and the other mom intervened.

Hi guys, I feel like I am party crashing here...

I live in West Michigan and soon will be picking up 5 new 8 - 10 week chicks from Destiny Farm over in Brighton area.

I was hoping I could hear from one or more people who have had experience with them, particularly in reference to how insanely carefully I should quarantine the new chicks.

I have heard that you don't need to quarantine chicks from a hatchery, but as this is a farm hatchery and also because the chicks are not day olds, I am assuming I should.

We have 5 hens that we have had for a year now, so adding to the flock is a new enterprise for us. I would appreciate any info anyone has for me, thanks!

You aren't crashing! Always glad to have more folks join in so WELCOME! As far as quarantine goes, it is better to be safe than sorry. Be sure to check out the link in Opa's, RaZ's or my siggy for info on the upcoming Chickenstock. We would love to see you there.

I am so glad to hear that the robins and red winged black birds are on their way back. I am ready for spring!

I also went to FFH today but resisted the temptation to get any chicks. It helps that I have an incubator and can hatch my own.

Cute pics RaZ!

See what I mean?

BOs are terrific birds. So friendly and pretty darn good egg producers. ETA: Checking records, the eggs are usually 60 - 65 grams for my Buff.

My vet has those thunder shirts and all the ladies there say they really do work. I'm a bit skeptical but I think I might try one. As my dogs get older, the thunder seems to bother them more

Oh, to answer your question: I have the 4 adult hens, the 2 juvy Uggos and now 8 TSC chicks and 4 mallard chicks. Stupid chicken math...

Interesting. Most are black or dark grey and gold, like these from McMurray.
