Good mornin' Michigan chicken lovers, Telluria, newbie here, thought I would let you know that the small flock class at MSU was great and I met a great bunch of people. I have been posting over at Meaty Madness since I am going to be growing meaties. Not that I didn't go into theMichigan thread once. I have stellite internet and the "latency" between looking for something and then getting it back down on the screen is way longer than dial up and this site is notoriously slow anyway, so it is kinda like I have to wait 30 seconds of more to load and get back a page I requested. I will work through it. This site is worth it.

On another note, I am trying to find a real organic non-gmo and non soy chicken feed for my future chicken herd, I will be leaving in about 15 minutes to see a guy who says he can get me the right feed I want for less than everything I have in the bank. I will be ordering 2 tons of feed so I want it right the first time. Thanks everyone for the support. Fred

Welcome Telluria,, let us know how your feed search goes. 2 tons is a lot of feed. take a good size storage area

Mom2 - I have a waterer you can have. Think we could get it dropped by helicopter like your dirt? LOL! Seriously though, are there equipment rentals near the city? You could rent a skidsteer for a day. It would make short work of your pile of dirt and fit in tiny spaces. :)
at the risk of showing my ignorance, what is a skidsteer? is it like a bobcat?

Welcome Telluria. Great bunch of Michiganders on here. I am a newbie as well, and numerous people have already helped me out immensely. Good luck w/ your search for 2 tons for chix feed. If you get that in 50lb feed sacks,... my back hurts just thinking about it!

Yup a Bob Cat.....just asked my DH what the heck is a Skidsteer!

Time change & nice weather has the deer moving about a tad bit late. Three just trotted through out property, up long side of the house near the garden, crossed the road & ditch and into the other field.

Now I see 2 more attempting to take same route & my dog is glued silently with tail wagging to the window.

Just heard the biggest ruckus in the yard...some hen flipping out. I ran out there, did a head-count...everyone looking freaked, but accounted for...
then I checked my broody.

Oh, shes fine. She announced that she was off her nest.
She is currently strolling the yard.

I certainly hope that she wasnt announcing "Okay enough of this..I have sat on eggs for two and a half weeks and I am done"...

I will be watching closely.

.I even check out the loaf of bread I am buying before I put it in my cart.
I bought a cantaloupe the other day; just grabbed one and put it in the cart. A lady standing there yelled at me, "you can't just take one, you need to check it first".

Good mornin' Michigan chicken lovers, Telluria, newbie here, Fred
Welcome Fred, We are a chatty bunch here. It is sometimes difficult to keep up, even with high-speed Internet.

Maybe they forgot to set their clocks.

Honestly, I don't see what all the fuss is about. The day didn't get any longer than the normal 24 hours. I used to fly to Milwaukee once a month, I'd leave Detroit at 9:00 and arrive there at 8:45. Did I really go back in time?

Kim, I have an extra waterer if you need one asap. Call me. Also, consider renting a small yard tractor. I'll be doing that sometime soon, maybe we can share the expense. I used a mini-Kubota to excavate my pond and it worked great. It does less damage to the yard than a skid-steer (Bob-Cat). Of course a skid steer is more fun, you can do wheelies with them.

Mom 2em All I forgot a stinkin small waterer!!!!
Mom, i used a glass bowl last year with a large rock in it so they couldn't drown. Could get you by until you get a waterer? They ended up growing so fast i didn't even need the waterer. (I prefer bowls/buckets for the big ones) Can i ask what city you are in? i have been wondering if you are anywhere remotely near me at all.

This is what i used. Don't matter to me if anyone uses it, just wanted to show it cause it is super concentrate, and cheaper than having to buy bottles of pre-diluted stuff. Don't sound like anyone knows what i was talking about? Spent a bunch of $$$ before i found this. Haven't sprayed the coop with it yet, might spray the corners and cracks and ceiling with it if it's a bad year. It's what i used to make my birdie "frontline", apparently: ( I really hate using chemicals, so i was trying to use as little as possible on the birds, and somehow it worked. When i say "a drop" i mean a drop! :) There are directions for proper dilutions for different livestock, dogs, and "area" sprays. My birdie "fronline" was 2/3 of the little bottle this stuff, 1/3 water, shake, and put 2 drops on the back of the neck for regular, 1 drop for banties. Not as non-toxic as the ivermectin, but it is a good subsitute if you happen to have a hard case that ivermectin isn't working on.
