wow thats just plain crazy!

Just heard a happy story about a rooster I re-homed last year. He saved the flock.

The Father went out to the coop to let everyone out in the morning and found an almost dead raccoon and the roo with just some missing feathers and light scratches. He locks the coop at night and thinks the raccoon must have already been in there. The rooster must get his smarts and toughness from Mom - Isa Brown, because Dad is a very sweet, meek, Silkie.

Lol....oh my.....sounds like u had quite the night.....I'm sure u ment F.....uzzy. lol. Not too bad up here, lots of puddles, not too much lightening or thunder.

I had never seen the manna pro spray either. TSC has so much stuff for chickens right now. I got the stuff that i was advised to use though. I am currently only treating Mr. Fluffers with it, and figured I would ask everyone here to see if anyone else had tried it. I figure, I treat my fluffy boy with the permithrin treatment, and the girls with the manna pro, since there is no egg withdrawal. The girls are showing no signs of having mites on the legs. I do not see any other mites either on them. SO, I guess I will be the guinea pig and report how I feel about it.

chickflick - I've been been battling Northern Fowl mites since last fall. I HATE MITES! They bite me. DH says I spend so much time in coop they think I'm a chicken too. I've been able to keep them under control but not get rid of them, mainly because we haven't had warm enough weather I could throw everyone out of the coop to spray it down. Anyway in teh last day the mite population has gone out of control, not sure why. So tomorrow it's supposed to be warm enough I'm throwing everyone out and cleaning the coop and then bathing and putting ivomec on them. Although I haven't been impressed with it so far. My biggest concern is I found mites on my broody which means she's giving them to the chicks and I don't know how you treat a chick. I am also going to try some essential oils in the nest boxes instead of chemicals. I am also going to do like Nova and attempt to burn all the bedding tomorrow.

Bianca - glad you're feeling better, take care of yourself. Good luck on the chicks.

We finally had a robin make it this far north!

Today was the first day it smelled, looked and sounded like spring! I was stuck with two apt. today and didn't get to enjoy it, but tomorrow looks even better!

We're under an ugly red area right now. Shouldn't last long so at least I won't have to worry about loosing any sleep over it...well, as long as it passes without causing any mischief!

I just read a treatment for the red mites. Read that you need completely empty the coop. Hose it down with bleach water, 1 cup bleach to a gallon of water. Then you need to mix equal parts kerosene and linseed oil and paint everything down in the coop with it, then let it dry out. Repeat every 3-4 days on the roosts and nooks and crannies. If you have a power washer, red mites will congregate together during the day, take the power washer to the little buggers and then blow torch them away from the coop. I like the sound of that... hehehe. FIRE FIRE eeeheeehheehehee (think beavis and his evil giggle). Do the permithrin treatment on each bird... chuck the eggs for 2 weeks.Hope you don't have customers to sell too. LOL. Be sure you are ventilating real well, and on a day when the birds can be out of the coop all day...

I'm glad ya'll like the recipe. It's so simple and as I was making up a batch tonight I thought you'd probably enjoy it. Next week I'll have to make up a batch of bagel breakfast sandwiches and take pictures. I have a trick for making the perfect egg portions.

I also found a natural alternative to the sevin dust, permethrin spray, and other various insecticides/pesticides... Orange Guard. Its supposed to be available at most hardware stores and some natural health food stores. I think I am going to give it a try next time I change out the bedding and use as a preventative.
