you can't eat ostriches... What can you do with them? Lol.
The Kroger here used to sell ostrich steaks. They were pricey but so delicious. It got me thinking about the "exotic" stuff I've eaten in my lifetime; bear, snake, alligator, turtle, cow brains, unknown food from street vendors in Mexico...

Bianca - I think the main thing is to make sure you check your local post office day and night because when they arrive someone is supposed to call you but they might not know that or might not be able to reach you, so I would check in with your local p.o. tonight, tomorrow a.m. tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow eve...............
Keep calling them, I made the mistake of trusting the P.O. to call AND that my phone service would put the call through. Ten little ducklings paid the price for that fiasco.

To all the newbies!! It's great seeing so many people jump on the chicken wagon!!! Hope we can meet you at Chickenstock held in Lansing.
What a b e a u t i f u l day!! Enjoy everyone!

chickflick It's been a over a week since we used the ivermectin (?) Should I wait a bit longer before using the other,
I really have no idea. I just don't want your birds dying cause of something i suggested!! I've not worked with the ivermectin yet, so i don't know how compatable it is with other stuff. Were it me, i would try the switchover on a bird that i was less fond of first and wait 24 hours to see if he has a reaction ,

I wouldn't use this treatment on chicks. ivomec only if you have them. Or wait until the ivomec is supposed to be worn off, but then if the ivomec isn't working they just keep populating.... Rock and a hard place.
what is "barn spray"?
Sorry, was trying to remember what they called it on the bottle. There are instructions on the pull out label on the bottle that are for diluting the stuff and spraying all over, I couldn't remember what exactly they called it :) I personally wouldn't spray it on the dirt or anything else that might go in their mouth....

NovaAman Again, has anyone tried the manna-pro leg mite spray?
I don't know if it's the same thing, but i tried the "poultry protector" spray for lice. Covered the whole bird with it cause it said to "coat the bird", used the whole dang bottle, and i swear i could almost hear the lice laughing at me as they swam away!!!

So that was about $10 I'll never see again... I absolutely love their other products, but that particular one was a dud for me.

If your other girls don't look to have the leg mites, i would coat their legs and feet really good with plain vasoline so the little buggers can't climb in their scales. Mabe spray the roost with something. Them kind of mites don't like to hang out off the bird, so if you prevent transfer you should be ok. Really, the only thing i'm wondering is about your roo having goop on him and what the poor hens are gonna think if he tries to....?! :D I don't know about the orange stuff, sounds cool. And for the chicks, i would try the plain vasoline. Their little scales aren't nearly so deep, so it should be sufficient!

It certainly is a nice day. And I have to leave for school soon.
I over-did it on Sunday and wrenched my back. I took some pain meds that a friend gave and was in a thick, syrupy fog all day yesterday. I can't see how she ever got hooked on that stuff. Who would ever want to feel like that just for fun?

The worst thing was it did nothing for the real pain. I need to be stretched on a rack.

I hope my back feels good enough to swing by TSC on the way home. I better stock up on shavings and chick grumble before I run out. I had forgotten how much babies eat. Eight chickies eat a little more than a quart per day and the 4 ducklings go through about a quart and a half. I hope TSC has pasture seed mix in stock, I have to reseed the runs.

Thought i'd report back on the rose repotting, so far it's still alive ! The new shoots had a little burn on them from withholding the water, but i still feel that that it was the only way to save it, since i don't know how long ago it had been overwatered. Still bummed about cutting the blooms, but i really want to see one of these things get big! I always thought that i was just horrible with mini roses, turns out that they are considered "throwaway" flowers. Unless you know the secrets of saving them and putting them outside in the ground to get big!

Don't wanna jinx myself. Have handled way more expensive flowers with less stress & grey hairs than what i think i gave myself yesterday!!!

Maybe take a yoga class for that back. So beautiful out it's supposed to be in the 80's next week, can you believe that! I'm boiling syrup today and the next, but I will have to go and get shavings. The 2 ducks go thru them at light speed compared to 13 chicks (CX at that). I just cleaned thier brooder and I hear them behind me making propellor noises in the waterer.

:: sigh :: I know. I think DH was extra cranky on Sunday because I don't blame Big Boy for not liking the neighbor.....I would have crowed at him too. I'm just sayin....

No not too funny at the time. SOB scared the bejesus out of me. I smacked it with a T post and cut it's neck but that didn't stop it. Then I thought darn, I killed one of my friends Ostrich ( and that was when they were like thousands of dollars). Well, he shouldn't have went out of state and left me to take care of them !!! But the stupid thing lived and he was never the wiser. Whew.

I agree with Olive. There would have been ostrich burgers on deck when your friend got home. An animal that comes after me?....is dinner. (you fighting with an ostrich though....comedy.

Heyy!! Wow, I haven't been here in forever!!! Glad to see you all!!! =)

I'm looking for some poults...approximately 10-12. Anyone here have any...or know a decent place to get some that won't cost me an arm and a leg (although they could have my bad ones that aren't working well lately lol).

Any info is greatly appreciated!!! =)

It was quit comical when I think of it now. Stupid things were waaaay down in their pen so I figured I could slip in and out to feed and water them. WRONG. That Ostrich was up there before I could even get at the food dish
ep.gif
. I seen that thing come running and the only thing I could find was a fence post up against their house. So I grabbed it and just swung at it. Needless to say they didn't get fed or watered that day !!!! I dumped the water out and left the food and scoop in the pen, grabbed my stuff and went home. Then I sat there and was trying to figure out what I was going to tell Paul the next day when he came home. Figured the Ostrich would bleed out and die but I never heard anything about it so it must have lived. Paul called when he got home and thanked me and I never mentioned it to him what happened LOL.

Got a Call from the Grand Rapids annex wanting to know if I wanted to come there and pick up my chicks or wait until tomorrow and get them in Rockford....

the little yellow one sure surprised my I am assuming she is an EE but not sure, ordered EE's, Wel's, Dom's, and GLW's any ideas if I am right about that?
