Olive - You NEED to come and hold me back. I have to go to TSC today and I have enough chicks lol.

You're on your own there. I'm already plotting my own demise when I get back. I fly back in late Thursday night. Guess where I'm planning on going Friday morning. Hahaha!

I really want to let them run around in the yard for a few minutes, I think they would have fun but I worry that they would get cold too fast. This is my first bunch of babies & I dont want anything to happen to them!! :) I guess they will tell me if they get cold right? Should I feed them some chick grit before they go outside too? Or will just eating dirt be ok?

Okay, fine, RB. NO MORE CHICKS! Don't do it. Get ducklings instead. Or turkey poults. Or goslings.

My broody mama had her chicks out in colder weather than this when they were about 2 weeks. She kept them in the winter run... And she'd fluff for them every few minutes so they could warm up... That's what I would do... If you have a cage top you can turn over on top of then like a pen, would make for easier catching... Or a piece of chicken wire fencing to make a small pen in a SUNNY location.

http://cdn.backyardchickens.com/0/08/080bb31d_SNSMetal021.jpeg. Ok... I want to get some of these from Chicken rustler... He suggests I see if any one else would like some to help with shipping costs. They're 5 a piece, and I am only wanting 5 to make a chuckle in the front yard veggie boxes... So... Well there you have it. We can get them in time for chicken stock, and I can bring them with. Oh, CR crafts them.

ok... Gonna have to do this with the laptop I think...

I'll throw this story out to add to the poison ivy tales. My dad was horribly allergic for years. Then he started raising bees. He always used sumac berries for the smoker. Since, he is no longer allergic. I think it has to do with the sumac, they are in the same family and I read a study that almond pickers are also immune. Anyway do you think it has any truth to it or just coincidence?
Poison ivy and poison sumac are in the cashew family (Anacardiaceae) and people who work with the cashews can develop the same allergic reaction after being exposed to the cashews. The berries of poison ivy are good food for the forest critters and birds.

When I do a tour a MBG, I like to show the kids how big this vine can get. There is one on a sycamore that reaches the crown at about 60 - 70 feet up and the stem at ground level is as thick as my forearm.

Burning any part of these plants releases the oils in the smoke and can get into people's lung and that is sure trip to the hospital. Don't burn it!
BTW keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your pocket when you go in the woods. The alcohol will help neutralize the ushinol oil.

Opa with each exposure you retain some of the ushinol oil in your system. Eventually you can accumulate enough to overcome that immunity.
True. I was never allergic to poison sumac, or poison ivy (which by the pic someone shared i may also have by my coop), but last summer i had an awful reaction to sumac that spread ALL OVER so bad that the doc thought that i may have had scabies instead, so he gave me both meds. It took days of steroids to get back to normal, and now i have an unused bottle of scabies med in my cabinet, which is how i knew what the active ingredient in it was in my earlier comments about leg mites Come to find out, the partial family member we were trying to give 2 of the goats to was feeding them sumac!!!? So the oil was on every doornob, toilet handle, table, lawnmower, rototiller, goat faces, horns.......... like i said EVERYWHERE. That's why we still have 3 goats instead of the 1. He threw half a coffee can of grain ON THE GROUND and that was all they had to eat other than the sumac.

I almost wish he would have a reaction so he would quit thinking it is funny.

sarah92480 How do you guys add quotes from other posts into your own replies on this forum?
While i am reading i hit the "multiquote" button for stuff i want to reply to. Then when you (finally) get to the end of your reading, you hit the regular "reply" button and they will all pop up in your box. To edit, you highlight the line you want with your mouse, and hit the "Ctrl" and the "C" buttons on your keyboard together, then click where you want it to go, hit "Ctrl" and "V" together, and voila! there it is. Then i go and highlight whatever i don't want and hit backspace to delete.

taprock I also found a girl with a bad case of bumble foot which I have never treated with any bird so I have to research it so I can care for her.

OK, this is a video of the surgery being done. It is easy, but you will need a helper. And gloves, since it is staph in there. The one good thing about the video is it kinda sticks with you. Should answer all your questions. I believe she also has a thread about this, if you have any more questions. :) If you try to give her pain relief, make sure it won't thin the blood. I have heard of giving antibiotics, and injecting them into the foot, but that was for mild cases and didn't always work, this way works and it won't come back if you get all the infection out.
