Hi again!
Thank you very much MJ!!!

I really appreciate the answer. The two little sick baby chicks died, which I expected. But I still plan to try again on the next ones.

I will get there eventually.

Hi,
I love listening to the redwing blackbirds sing. They are so pretty. That is my favorite part about spring is listening to all the birds in the morning.

We even had some Sandhill cranes out here before we saw the robins. Come on Spring:weee

I haven't seen robins, but did see red winged black birds in the pasture yesterday, my cat was trying to stalk them! lol Don't worry, he didn't even come close!

oh baby ducks are so darn cute!
It wont be long and I will be getting calls for the mallard babies...so many- makes me wonder what happens to all the mamas.

I have had some pretty devastating things occur today- first, I was posting this big ole post here this morning to you all and my power went out.

I have eighty eggs in two incubators. I covered them with blankets and boiled water on the stove (gas) for steam. I still couldnt get their temps above 90 degrees. This was for six hours.

So, power back on while I am at work- called my kid who I let skip school just to incubator sit- and I told him to unwrap them then plug them back in.

(I came home from work and one of the incubators read: 104.

Then my son called me while I was working and said that my furnace was no longer blowing heat. Only cold air. I figured pilot light or something so I told him to turn it off at the main switch until I got home.
It wasnt fifteen minutes later that he called me again and said they all smell smoke (ten yr old, thirteen yr old, and him- almost sixteen)
and that my smoke alarm wouldnt quit going off. I could hear that. Nobody knew where the smoke was etc, so I told them to get their coats and get out of the house. I was FREAKING OUT!!!!!! My parrot, my home, my parrot...my cats... I thought for a moment and before I called 911- I called my daughter. "Is the oven on?" "Yes" "Is that where the smoke is coming from?" "Yes. " "Why arent you outside? Turn off the oven." "We did. The pans inside are smoking"
"Open a kitchen window air the house out close the windows dont kill my parrots"

They had turned the oven on for heat. Inside the oven is where I store my cast iron skillets. They heated/etc. caused a big smoky mess. No fire.

Oh my furnace? As far as I can tell, when the power returned it must have surged and fried out the circuit board. The fuse is good, and I cant figure it out- I cant restart it, nothing. So, no furnace for us.

i know you are asking Steve, but in case he doesn't jump on...i don't leave anything longer than 24 hours from the time the last chick hatches. some people will give it 48 hrs.

hope all works out well for you!

I don't think she was asking me specifically, especially since I am a greenhorn. I'm just glad she re-asked the question.

Busy day here today....it is just gonna get busier for me till winter.

I got the urge this evening after chores to fire up the Troy bilt tiller....heck the chickens were playin in the dirt, figured it was a sign for me.

Tomorrow I plan on getting the lawn roller out and flatten the lawn, and try to tidy this place up from the winters mess.

On the toe, I can move it more and it isn't as swollen so hopefully not broken, thanks for all the thoughts and prayers!

I am a tad accident prone, and sometimes it just takes too much time waiting around the emergancy room to find out that you fractured a bone. Your symptoms sound like a fracture to me. What I found worked for me was just to tape the injured toe or finger to its neighbor. Tape it enough that it does not move much, but is not too uncomfortable. After a week you should be as good as gold, as long as it was only fractured. Of coarse I was also the kid that broke my arm completely in half about 4inches below my shoulder and was out playing baseball 2 1/2 weeks later. Doc said he never saw a complete break heal so fast.

Wow what a day Mom to them all!

We got the eggs in the incubator!!! April 2nd Rachel said is the expected hatch date!

Well Emily is still sick. She has a terrible headache, stufy nose, and a fever. Talking to folks today, it is going around. They say it only lasts 3 days, Emily is on day 2 1/2.

Nathan, my 2 year old, threw up tonight. (It's also going around I found out.) I think this is just his 2nd time. We didn't make it to the toliet either. So my baseboards and door jams are scrubbed with a toothbrush clean. Wasn't on my agenda tonight, but the mess is cleaned up.

Everyone is sleeping and the house is tidyed up. So I am off to bed. I get to sleep in tomorrow! I am hoping Nathan does fine through the night and no one else gets sick.

Oh man---I hope you kids get better soon. Puking kids is the worst. My kids were trained early on to carry their "puke buckets" everywhere with them. My mom even found cute yellow ones with smiley faces!! My ds gets car sick, so we even have one for the truck. It saves doing laundry.
It seems like the bugs going around this year were particularly nasty.

Question----someone had posted they found bantams chicks at a farm store---which one? Does TSC carry them? Do you just go and pray they have what chicks you want? In my quest for bantam show birds for 4-H I learned you can order singles at the local elevator, by it doesn't say if they are purebred and you just get whatever they send. Sorry for all the questions---this is a topic my friend hasn't dealt with before either.
