Yep, we're right around the corner from each other! Washburn, that is.
Yes, my last baby just graduated from Lakeville in May. Her first day out, she got up that morning and said "Gee I feel like I'm skipping school".

That was pretty funny!

That was a pretty good drive-by! Now here I am with 7 hens and 1 roo running around the place.

The roo seems to not like my oldest son. We're thinking it's because he's usually in a pair of shorts. As soon as he see's him he'll chase him all the way out the driveway, I think. We think it's the short's because I went out there one day in shorts and the little brat got my leg. Very close to braking the skin. Put my jeans back on went back out there to him and he didn't even notice. Chickens can be a little weird sometimes, right?

I have about 25lbs of Kent Home Fresh starter left over. If anyone would like to have (no charge) it, they can pm me for directions. I hate to see it go to waste... I am in Hillsdale Co., near Somerset Center.

Hey Chicka-Chicka-Boom-Boom,

when my DH's car broke down on the way to work in Mason, he left his car in your driveway for the day [with a note, of course]. Lovely property; so glad a chicken person bought it!

I have White Rocks and New Hampshire Reds; both are friendly and good egg layers, too. We handled them a lot when they were pullets, so they're used to people. Visitors like the way they come running to greet every car that pulls into the driveway.

Oh, yeah . . .

Hope everyone will come to our Lansing-area Chickenstock at the park on Main St. in Potterville. It's Aug. 2, 1-4 p.m.

Bring your favorite eatables, stories about your chickens, and PHOTOS.

Hey Frankenchick!

I'm amazed at all the locals that are on this board. We are going to try to come to your chickenfest in Potterville, so we can make some new friends before we even get our house and chickens. Thanks for setting the date. I will know better about whether we can come after this weekend.

We go to get our house inspection next Wednesday. Here's hoping that everything checks out ok, and we can keep moving along on this deal. We're getting pretty excited, and are having so much fun talking about the things we will be able to do there. Right now we just have 1/2 a city lot and no garage or even a garden shed... we are really moving up the property ladder now, with 6 acres, a barn and 2 garages!

DH isn't as excited about the chickens as he is about getting a riding lawnmower... lol

Now I am torn between getting a bunch of chicks or getting some started pullets this fall. I eventually want to end up with enough chickens to make some money selling eggs. If you build your flock gradually, how hard is it to keep introducing new birds? Or do you get several birds and let THEM build the flock by hatching their eggs when it's right for them? Would it be better to start with a bigger flock to cut down on the stress or rearranging the pecking order over and over? I like to read about people getting to know their hens as pets too, so I can see why you might just get a few at a time and baby them... now I'm torn.

Also, if you have a few different types of hens and then get a rooster later on, do you have to keep the breeds separate or the rooster separate, or do you just let them do what they want or ??? Sorry to be so ignorant about this. I have been reading a lot of posts here, and my mind is spinning with possibilities and uncertainty.

I will be thoroughly checking out this barn too. Now that I am armed with more information, I'm hoping that I can make a more educated plan of action. I guess it's not going to be as simple as I thought at first. Who KNOWS what might be living in that big dark barn already... the people haven't even been living in the house for almost 2 years.
I'm a little bit scared, and DH doesn't really seem to be that interested in exploring the barn... eek! Give me courage!

Thanks for any advice. Maybe after we move in, some would like to come and check out the property and help me figure out a plan of action. I don't want to spend a million dollars, but want the hens to be happy and safe. I'm hoping that we have a good start already, with the big barn already there. We might get some bigger animals later, like a few goats or maybe alpaca. We'll see...
