I just settled my new goats Twix and her wether friend in after an hour and a half long car ride! They ate hay the entire ride, so I don't think they were too distressed! She'd been at the breeder until she was successfully bred. The first buck, a newbie, didn't get the job done. So a different buck managed to get her in her next heat.

Before I left them alone to chill, I handed out treats. Twix is really a sweetheart, but a bit leery now, as to be expected. But as soon as I revealed some dried cherries in my pockets her reaction went from "STRANGER DANGER! STRANGER DANG-oh! You have treats! Yay!"

You are looking at one TINY boer wether! Which is astounding, because his parents (who I saw firsthand) are bruisers, they're massive and muscled. He just turned out to be a peanut! He is a little bit shorter than Twix is! He was born on 3/20/2011, so that is pretty much his full size.

I wanted to dye them in the shell, but I was too scared to do it.

I managed to dye my hands bright pink. My daughter Kayla dyed one of the white banty roos neon pink using a spray bottle.

The little newly hatched chicks were so small- and I didnt want to chill them, so I just quickly tried swabbing some dye on with a paint brush.
Thats why they arent bright or no more than two were done.

I just booked our room in indiana for my brothers graduation. Funny thing here...first thing I noticed on the map was its just down the road from Tractor Supply... hahahahaha...um. no.

I keep seeing pictures of newly hatched chicks. Those chicks going into a brooder while other eggs are still in the incubator. LOCK DOWN doesn't mean open it every time a chick hatches. LOCK DOWN means don't open it until all the chicks have hatched. Many hatcheries wait until day 23 before opening the incubator. You will lose vital humidity and heat when you open the incubator. Plus having chicks in the incubator making noise often triggers the slow chicks to hatch.

Stacykins-

I LOVE her

and Twix is a wonderful name lol

Sam-

I didnt take mine out until it was over. The five eggs in the 'bator were no good. I dont know what happened to them, but I eggtopsied them somewhat...they were dead in there somewhere during the days before lockdown. The eggs were dark inside, so i couldnt tell when I locked down or they wouldnt have even went into lockdown mode.

TELL TELL!
Telling of the story is a sad tale. It is the story of once best friends who parted ways over one person having chickens in the suburbs. It is a tale of of one person not complying with the wishes of another who has determined that she is Queen of the neighborhood.

OK, I'm being glib here.

There is a word that I find so vile that I would never use it, but I certainly found it descriptive of her behaviiour today. Especially after she called me a "rooster vacuum".

I'm not going to rise to the bait or sink to her level.

Well, not gonna get into deep discussions, said my peace already.
I gave my birds a huge house larger than some runs, free feed them, hold them when they jump into my lap, we "free range" together, and i share my finds with them. Everyone is bright eyed and very obviously happy. That's the best i can do. :) The only thing i could do better is to let them free, but they don't wanna, lol. All stand by their door when they've had enough wandering.

Ok, here's my new house chicks, the broody didn't want them. I have them in an armoire by my bed, until they get a few feathers, then i am going to bring them out to the others and make an area to keep them that i can use the heat lamp with. Gotta keep 'em quiet, not supposed to have them here, shhhh.

The little bean at the top of the last photo is my favorite, her toe was savaged badly by another chick in the store, so she is missing her toe feathers and her toe is bruised. I had to get her, the blood was making all the chicks crazy. I don't know if she is younger, or runty, but she is very short backed and stands taller than the others. I hope she comes out round like my favorite hen! :) Very affectionate, this one. the other 2 could care less, but she comes running

Since i only have a few, i could get the manna pro gamebird starter, and boy what an improvement in their poo! Solid already, looks like an adult's. I also used the soft layer of mulched pine from one of our trees out back for the bedding, it is working great. I wanted them to be able to get whatever it is that the adult chickens seem want from this stuff when we are scratching out there. In case you are wondering about the light placement, this is where the heat level seems to make them the most active and happy, i switched to a 100 watt cause the infrared put waaay to much heat off for my tiny operation. The bucket is a heavy duty planter pot, the black holds the heat nice.

Raz, you made me think way too hard for that one, then it was a "duh" moment!
I didn't sleep more than a couple hours all night for worry!

I just can't believe DH got me chicks for Easter.  As much as he's on my case about them he bought them for me.  I was complaining earlier in the year that I wanted WCB Polish but didn't want to buy 25 so....
What a sweet guy :)
