My eventful morning included getting ready for a sunrise service/breakfast at church. In between getting food ready my son yells coyote. So I shoot the coyote and go back to the food and sent DH out to get it. He insisted on pictures then. I managed to only get a little blood on my shoes! Nothing like a bloody coyote and dressy WHITE shoes. They cleaned up with peroxide.



Now I'm home to change into comfortable clothes and meet the rest of the family at my parents, then to DH family. Family is nice but for once it would be nice to stay home on a holiday. Enjoy your day everyone .... and all the cute chicks!

Happy Easter everyone.

So I shoot the coyote and go back to the food and sent DH out to get it. He insisted on pictures then. I managed to only get a little blood on my shoes! Happy Easter everyone. Oh my. I have this visual of Taprock sweetly cooking in the kitchen in her Easter best with a loaded shotgun on the window sill. She puts down the rolling pin, calmly steps to the window and blows the coyote away with one shot from her hip, then returns to the pie crust she is rolling out, never losing the sweet smile on her face as she hums Easter hymns.

Well that was interesting.

I went out the garage/coop to check on the chicks. I hear the distinct flapping of feathers against the window. I figured it was one of the uggos who went over the wall and couldn't figure out how to get back.

Imagine my surprise when Gary the hawk came out from behind the curtains. So I opened the garage door and out he flew. Next was a beak count. Gary's Oester dinner was one of the SLW chicks. The only thing left was the feet.

That hawk must have figured out how to enter through the hen-hole, cross beneath the work bench and select from the menu. With all of the wind I didn't hear a thing.

Hows everyone been?? Have a nice holiday?? I've been busy making chicken tractors. Got one done and it's up for sale on , well someplace I'm probably not supposed to mention. Making a 2nd one. Love doing it, it's a blast.

Got a new batch of 18 Dominiques on friday, April 6, had the lovely pleasure of having grand-daughter here when they arrived. So much fun to have one animal lover to help unpack, teach them how to take their first drink, etc.

She couldn't stay out of the brooder after they arrived!!

RaZ - I'm so sorry about your chick loss. Darn hawks are so smart. I can't believe he actually went into an enclosed space like that without a large opening for escape. Now you're really going to have to watch since he knows how to get in.


This afternoon I watched a red-tail hover on an updraft for what seemed like minutes. He was facing my yard but was way high up and back over the woods. I'm thinking he can't possibly see my chickens from that high and far away, can he? Just when I thought that he pulled in his wings and began a swift descent straight for us. Now I'm thinking OMG, he's gonna attack while I'm standing here! Then he veers slightly to the north and comes down fast over my neighbor's house and into the gravel pit across the road. I heard an uproar from the chickens and ducks over there and am thinking he probably had dinner. I tried to herd mine into the run but they weren't about to go in that early. I said OK, be hawk bait then!

very funny! I've told DH I don't want to waste my time hunting predators, but if they come around I won't hesitate to shoot them... no matter when or what they are interrupting.

What are you teaching those hawks down there Raz? I sure hope none of them up here get that smart. Sorry to hear you lost your girl.
