I know you all are chicken people... but what is your opinion on quail vs silkies?
I love the look of silkies... Are they loud?
I am expecting a teacher to hatch quail this May, and I have adopted her quail before. They were super quiet and I really enjoyed their little whispers that they would call to eachother. They were small enough to stay in a rabbit cage.
She was considering quail vs chickens...
If you think that silkies are better I might order some eggs for her.
I am looking for pet quality... not so much egg production.
What are silkies hatch rate?

Chicken grandma - my hubby was in Hawaii in the military and hated it! You left out his most hated. Mongoose. He was sleeping out on some training thing and woke up with one on his chest. I would have loved to witnessed it!

My eggs shipped today! Time to dig out the incubator again.

Talking canning - can anyone recommend a pressure canner. I show up at moms to can if I have large amounts or can't do a water bath. But I really want one of my own and have no idea where to find a good one or what to look for. My mom's is ANCIENT!

Looking forward to restocking supplies this summer. Canning, freezing, and dehydrating. I have limited freezers space so canning and dehydrating come in handy. I have already been out gathering wild chives to dry.

Meat birds are kind of freaky looking when they grow out of that chick look. They are prone to heart attack (flip) and leg/hip problems.

My hoop run made it through THIS winter just fine.

Bella was my vote for the heifer but by the time I caught up on reading the decision was already made. Glad you picked the right name. Hebe.

Can't go wrong with All American or Presto. Just make sure you buy a Pressure Canner, not a Pressure Cooker. Lots of times people will use the terms interchangeably in conversation, but they are not interchangeable pieces of equipment.

Agreed! All my friends have told me I am grandma like and one says I should be Amish. I don't think I would mind.

I have an old spirit I guess. Let's make a village like "The Village" without the creepy 'things we do not speak of' beasts. Oh, and modern medical attention if needed.

Not any louder then any other chicken! And hatch rate depends on a lot of different variables...if they are shipped, how long they sit, fertility of the roo covering the hens, and of course the incubator being used to hatch them.

We always used to "joke" that you know you waited a day to long to butcher them if their legs start breaking. It was gross and sad.

Went out a few minutes ago and watched the international space station pass overhead - quite a sight, the sky was full of brilliant stars. But cold, we are still getting freezes just about every night. The only flowers out so far are the crocuses here, the rest are smart enough to stay underground for a while longer. Night all

To end the night, I have to tell you I finally found silkie chicks for my daughter.

I honestly didn't think I'd find any more after passing them up a month ago, but I did. YAY!
I got four of them plus 2 others that I'm not sure about, but I think they might be mille fleurs.
Now I'm just hoping my odds of girls are better this time around.
