Well, off to bed I go! Checked on the incubator and the eggs are rockin' and rollin'! Interested to see what colors I get this time and how many are showgirls and how many are normal bearded. I can't wait to get this new coop done so I can seperate my showgirls from my bearded silkies.
Have a wonderful night and see ya'll tomorrow! (hopefully while I'm posting chick pictures!)

I know you all are chicken people... but what is your opinion on quail vs silkies?
I love the look of silkies... Are they loud?
I am expecting a teacher to hatch quail this May, and I have adopted her quail before. They were super quiet and I really enjoyed their little whispers that they would call to eachother. They were small enough to stay in a rabbit cage.
She was considering quail vs chickens...
If you think that silkies are better I might order some eggs for her.
I am looking for pet quality... not so much egg production.
What are silkies hatch rate?
A penny for your thoughts....

If you are looking for pet quality I would say a silkie instead of quail. Quail appear to be more nervous not as tame, and the ones I had - well the little thing crowed pretty loud for a quail, Not loud like a large rooster, but louder than you would expect.

If we could get a celebrity like say, Tori Spelling to adopt an Uggo then the breed would become an overnight sensation and you could go down in history Mom2.

Thank you Chicken Grandma- I was feeling ignored. I typed out that huge post about the RIRs, and then those three posts..lol.

I was waiting for the punchline. I thought the chicken was going to explode.

I have two meaties by accident. They are big but not that big. They are six weeks old. They even roost on top of the rabbit hutch. They are not as active as the other banties, but they are still pretty active. Right now, I am living in denial- because we really like them.

To end the night, I have to tell you I finally found silkie chicks for my daughter.

I honestly didn't think I'd find any more after passing them up a month ago, but I did. YAY!
I got four of them plus 2 others that I'm not sure about, but I think they might be mille fleurs.
Now I'm just hoping my odds of girls are better this time around.

that you have girls. I refuse to think of a gender for my little silkies and Uggos. In fact, I am wondering if I should wish for roos so that they will be pullets....

As I sit here reading all the posts since I last was on and drinking the day's first cup of coffee, I'm reminded of the Folgers coffee jingle. A very pleasant catching tune but they've got it slightly wrong. The best part of waking up isn't a cup of coffee, it's waking up.

Looks like today are both going to be great days weather wise so anything needing to be done outside shouldn't wait until the weekend. The weekend forecast flat out sucks. I plan to finish the boat trailer I've been rebuilding, take it to be weighed, then get it registered and plated. One the way back I will stop and fill the gas cans so I can mow again. Sure is a bite that it now costs about $10 just to mow the lawn.

Good Morning Sam!

I am just about to go slip these two chicks under my Silkie hen.
I have to work both today and tomorrow- wont get to enjoy nice weather. I was planning on having RaZ come by this weekend, but if the weather is crappy we may as well just wait- me and cold dont get along, most definitely dont spend any time outside if it is cruddy out.

Cant be MUCH longer before the nice weather comes back. right??????

I have coffee, but am out of milk and creamer...so, its black or nothing here. *sigh*

ETA;

I just came back in from putting the babies under her...and remember that I said I put four eggs out there, but two werent any good? Well, imagine my surprise when I reached under her to remove the eggs, I felt eggshell...so I lifted her up, and there is a little black baby under her! Goes to show, sometimes we just get it wrong, lol. So, three Uggo offspring. I wonder if the black comes from the Polish? ( They are black....)

Morning All. 2 cups coffee down while reading all yesterday's posts. Chatty folks indeed.

Welcome to newbie BackYardFarmMom (hope I got that name right).

Stopped at a TSC yesterday just to look at the chicks. Sooo cute, and they were in good care and shape at this location, so not all TSC & FFH are slack in the care of their stock. I'm so impatient to have them running around the yard, but I really want to hatch them out with my own homemade incubator. It seems like I have been waiting for this forever. The last place we lived, we could have horses - but no chickens or other farm animals. So now that we are home and retired from the military, I have been working on making this happen. We lived in more states than I could count and our number of moves was near 20, so being home really means something. And actually getting here before dad died of cancer last December was priceless. There's some things in life that are horrible to go thru, but being with family does makes it easier to deal with.
.
Still waiting to get some eggs for my incubator though. Hubby says he knows someone with chickens running around the yard so will stop and ask if they would share some. Mom seems kind of excited about having chickens. She is not really an animal person, but her kitchen is overly decorated with chickens. I think she is at least intrigued with it, and has come out to help with the coop from time to time. I think it's good for her to look forward to and be excited about something.

Have a productive day everyone. Looks like it will be a nice one.

Good Morning All & Welcome to All the new Comers! This thread just keeps growing and growing.

2Nd cup of coffee and pancakes made and ate just waiting to get one off to school. Today I plan on painting the chicken tractor. Hopefully DH will get the rest finished by this weekend although the weather doesn't seem to be too promising.

Mom2....what a nice surprise you got this morning!

COLD COLD COLD!

I wish I hadn't put my electric blanket away already.

could just crawl in bed with my little 3yr old furnace and 6yr old sauna... Those boys are hot little guys... Oh well... Guess I will sucker the dogs into coming to bed with me for a nap. Lol.
