Today I had a very nice conversation with a lady from the National Advisory Council for Pet Partners or what used to be the Delta Society. She is one of four in the country who has used a bird as a therapy animal. She went over all I would have to do to be certified. One of the requirements is that your animal has to be harnessed and leashed. So my question is have any of you used a harness and leash on a bird? If so I'm looking for some advise or recommendations.

I've tried to walk one of my chickens with a small dog harness. She tried to run away from the harness for a while, then would walk around normally for a bit before trying to take off again.
I think it could be done, much like training a cat to walk with a harness. You'd have to start at a younger age, perhaps a few months old, and get them used to wearing the harness frequently and being on a leash.
With the dog harness, you slip it on over their wings and clip it in place, then attach a leash. I think it would work best with a lap chicken, since they're more adjusted to being handled.

Sarah, I think Raz is just trying to avoid us now

MORELS: I read that if you cover them with a jar and keep them moist they will grow larger!!! I am trying it out on one that is seperated from the group... It seems to be a little bigger!!

RAZ: You must be great company for everyone fighting for a date with you to chickenstock!!

BIRD HARNESS: I have seen macaw leashes at the pet store... Maybe you could get some ideas from one and make a light weight one to get them acclimated... I have also had ferret/rabbit harnesses that are light and easy to adjust...

OMG Raz that joke was so terrible! But it made me laugh out loud anyway; I must be tired. And my finger hurts. I wish I could like stuff on here, i would have liked that comment. hehe

MIL had a house right on the 45th parallel on Thunder Bay River. I loved going up there. I spent a lot of time there and surrounding areas.

(Also spent time in Atlanta, GA., but I'll keep it PG)

Oh and I missed this, sorry haha...that's cool, it's a great area up there. We go camping up on the Black River every year, my parents own property & are currently building a cabin. And PG is no fun at all.
