SILKIES!!! I understand that they are not real chickens. HEHEHE. I still get the giggles over that. LOL Sorry EMAW, you said it...
Ouch, I knew that would catch up with me sooner or later. Glad I could help with the giggle quota on here. Well it's 3 am and I am awake. Hope you all get a better nights sleep. It's finally Friday and job shadow day for my daughter, so I get to take her to breakfast and then show her exactly how "interesting" dads job is. But all time with her is good time, she hasn't hit those teen years yet. I'm not ready for that.

I got the 4 most beautifuliest little partridge silkie chicks from RIRJen today. I am up to 14 Silkies now including my big Partridge rooster named Lance from her.

I'm glad you like them!! :) I was having a hard time hiding them in the lab because 40 ft away you could hear..peep..peep...PEEP...PEEP...PEEP! PEEP!

It's amazing how something the size of a pingpong ball can be that loud! I almost kept those for myself...my partridges are always really nice looking! Go figure since we don't want to do that variety! I have a splash...it is only pet quality because it has 4 toes on both feet instead of 5. I decided to peek at thier feet cause I hadn't checked and of course the only one with an issue would be a splash.

I have 2 blacks too if anyone's interested!

Ohhhhh I would love splash ones too. I will be looking for some.

I cant do it the way a farmer or I will even go as far as to say, a responsible chicken owner, would do. I took it/take them to work and euthanize them by lethal injection.
So is that something that us non-vet chicken owners can do? How would a responbile chicken owner do it?

Hatchet for adults quick twist for chicks....sorry if that offends anyone but I don't have the $$ to take a chicken to the vet to get euthenized

Both are quick and done.

LF blue orps, b/b/s true ameraucanas, paint Silkies, and I will probably throw a few of my FBCM's in too. The #1588 is bound to work better than the LG piece of garbage that I'm using. I may be up to my eyeballs in chickens in a few weeks. If any of y'all are nterested, I will probably have extra chicks.

HH... The pilot had second thoughts about adult birds, but I may just take you up on your offer to ride together.

That would be great as you wouldn't want to miss out on meeting all these wonderful folks. [and Opa's smoked chicken]

Hi there!

Boyne City is allowing 4 hens in a region in which city chicks have been hotly contested (see Petoskey). So, I'm excited, and have 2 buff orpingtons and 2 australorps hanging out in their brooder in my garage. They are only 2 weeks old, but so far so good. When do folks in the north usually let their chicks out into the coop? Is it like plants, and you don't put them out until after frost danger is over?

& welcome!

anyone can take a chicken to the vet and have them euthanized, however, if that is not an option because of distance or because of financial reasons, Jen summed it up .And so did Opa. I just am unable to do it that way...Im a wimp.

RIRJen and Opa.
Thanks.
I figured it was probably something simple like that, but just wanted to make sure that ya'll didn't have some secret you were keeping from me! Hopefully I won't have to use this technique anytime soon!

I was trying to think about a quick way to make another coop (aside from the out house which will take a bit more thought and planning)........... and it hit me! I have a small octagonal gazzebo that was pretty solid, and not used at all. So I asked dad if he had some wood I could use for siding and ohhhhhh did he ever!!... I got some beautiful 12" weathered barn siding boards! I'll do a simple board n batton siding and fix the roof, it should work great! I'm excited!

This is my boy Gino...such a goof!

Mom, what are you doing to my babies!!! LOL!

Taprock...good story. Seemed like something my five-yr-olds would enjoy. Is the purpose of the story just for the story's sake or are you going to have some follow up questions like:
Are there any things you are scared of?
What are some things you could do to overcome your fears like Peep?
How does it make you feel when you are brave?

I am not very good at those types of questions, but something along those lines would be good.

The only line in the story I didn't care for was, "After the boy had shut off the tv and gone into the house Peep crept out and got a drink from the cat's dish and snuck a bite to eat."
Is it OK to steal somebody else's stuff, even if it is only a drink and something to eat? I hate passing on criticism...please view it is constructive.
You wanted feedback, so there you have it.
Great story overall!
I have a page with discussion questions that ends with the idea that if you are doing the right thing even when it is scary you are also brave. I also have a page that shows the real Peep and tells them about WCB Polish. This is to lead in to learning about chickens. Are you scared of chickens? Most chickens are scared of you, which in turn leads to how to handle a chicken and basics.
