I soooooooooooooo much want to move the four week old chicks out of my kitchen and out into the yard. I will this weekend. Robin is taking the banties, and I am taking the others to my brother in law. I have the Uggo chicks that are going to Silly Chicken in my kitchen as well- and my kitchen is DUSTY.

how old is he? None of mine have red in their comb *yet*. I will try to get a picture of my d'uccles so we can all compare them.
My Office is what I've been using as a holding pen for my brooder and it looks like a wild west dust storm ran through there!

When Waffles and her crew go outside I'm going to have some serious cleaning to do! Only about another month. Sigh...

I'll take some pics of my 2 1/2 week old d'uccles today too and post them. Their combs are yellow but they are starting to get tiny combs. Why on earth can't I remember what Waffles comb looked like? GRRR!

Haha...no I was just really really tired last night, didn't know what to say and sometimes silly little things come out.

SOOOOO....I have a roo.
Don't know if you guys remember me asking about one of my chickens, and saying that it seemed different and that I didn't know squat but I thought it might be a roo? Well I was right. I went out to the coop this morning to let them out & feed them, and they were all being super quiet, which isn't normal. They usually start chirping when I open the gate. I looked in the window and he was standing right in front of it and let out this little half-a.s.s. crow. Then everybody else chirped at me. Then he did it again. It was so hilarious. I filled their food and he did it again, nobody had moved. They didn't come out of the coop, but they don't usually at that time when I go out there that early. Every time I said something to him, he crowed. It was so cute and funny, but now I just hope he stays a nice roo and doesn't become a jerk.
That's so funny. How old is he again? I'm pretty sure I have at least 1 roo and I'm curious as to when it will try and crow.

Opa: That's cute! I'm constantly amazed by chickens too. Maybe more like captivated. And your description of skinning a bird made my skin crawl. Lol I'm so not ready for that kind of thing.

I also am thinking its time to cull roosters. Is a rooster almost 2 years old worth eating? Yesterday, Mr. Fuzzy (who my son raised and carries everywhere) pecked my son on the side of the head and drew blood. I told my son that was strike two, one being he always attacks my hubby. My son is just sobbing, I asked him if he was ok. "Yes" he says "But I would rather go to the hospital than lose Mr. Fuzzy" needless to say Mr. Fuzzy is on probation.
Awww...I hope Mr. Fuzzy gets his act together. My boys have already refused to eat our chickens when they slow or stop laying.

My youngest son loves toads. He loves to bring them into the house and "play" with them. He sets up habitats and everything. I finally bought him some fire bellied toads last year and he doesn't like them as much as a good old fashion wild toad.

& Welcome to the MI chat thread Jeff. Are you anywhere near the Brookside Amish store? Be sure to check out mine, Opa's or RaZ's siggy lines for info on the upcoming Mi chickenstock.

Keeping chickens cool.... I freeze up milk jugs with water and put them out in the runs when it gets really hot out. Also I put dish pans full of water for them to stand in to cool off. Sometimes I will hook up the hose with a mister on it too.

She make a sound that is best described as sounding like a crow with plugged sinuses.
That's funny. My last year old bantam hen (in my avi) has taken that up, too. Since she became the lone one we pen her near Neil for company and every morning we can hear him crow with a follow-up from her. She does pretty good at it.

Which brings up a question. I have a few girls that were hatched last spring who are looking awful. When would they be due to molt?
x2 I have a few girls like that and would like to know, too.

vj and fuzzy- what age d'uccle pics are you looking for? I have a pair that are 4 weeks old if you want to see them.

eta- vj, I looked at your link and I agree with the few others that you have 2 boys there. I have one that was somewhat similar in coloring to your black/white if you want to see a pic at how he turned out.

Wow, it's 85 degrees and sunny here. We get strong wind gusts and the maple seeds hitting the roof sounds like rain.
Too bad the chickens don't eat them.
