I like you, too. You're definitely not number four.

How do I change my screen name to Number Four?

We have a SLW, and Australorp, and the BO. We'll be replacing the BO with another. Are you saying getting a different breed isn't a good idea? I was thinking a BO and another good winter, family friendly, quieter breed, for 4 total chickens. I was considering 2 bantam chicks, and am reading conflicting reports about mixing them w/ standard sized birds. And it looks like sexing bantams isn't done?

I just checked Townline's website, and it looks like they don't have much selection. Is it likely they'd have more variety for a walk in customer?
Hi Amy, if you phone Townline they will tell you what they have and when you can come and get them. I drove over and got two Isa Reds last Fall.

Also, chickens like their kind. I know there are exceptions but getting 2 SLW and 2 Astralorps would be a nice mix. Of course if you get 4 different breeds they will be fine but bantams do have a harder time not getting picked on and a lot of us have a bantam coop because the bantams are more often the target of attack from hawks, foxes and other chickens. Not always but it does complicate things to have different ages and different sizes. Since you are kind of on thin ice in your neighborhood it might be best just to have 4 chickens about the same size and age that can be housed together. And don't worry about having 'too many'. They die of various reasons and so soon you will be down to 3, then 2. Losing some is part of having chickens. Good luck!

No really, Chickenstock is great fun [...] and eat some of Opa's smoked chicken (Mmmm).

See I didn't even really know what Chickenstock was when I signed up. I just saw smoked chicken and figured I was in.

We have a grand tradition in our family of going to various festivals and fairs just for the food. Sure the entertainment and stuff are there, but the food's where it's really at (according to my dad and me, anyway).

Omg!!! I just left the feed store with 6 more chicks.... someone help me!! I need a chicken intervention ( but they are so stinkin cute!!!)

Ha I was just having this conversation with a friend in DC today. (because I've somehow decided I wanted some banties and will be picking some up this weekend - Thanks Opa!)

We have a deal. Aside from fowl hatched on the property, after Sunday I cannot acquire any more until August 11. If I fail at that, I pay for the shipping on her Thanksgiving turkey. I think that might be the deterrent but, of course, I say that NOW...

Well now that I made some friends on here lol and all it took was a little trolling jk I can tell you a little more bs about myself and situation. we are new to backyard chickens and live in the ann arbor area .Our small young flock consist of 2 rhode island reds and a leghorn from Mcmurry hatchery all currently 15 weeks old . I'm looking for a new easter egger to replace 1 we just lost RIP Big. she decided it was a good idea to jump the neighbors fence where their pitbull was waiting, she didn't have a chance

It's kind of nice starting my meaties so early, now I have a few dozen chickens and a scattering of ducks in the freezer and the warm weather is still on the horizon. All the baby rabbits are rehomed for a new family to learn breeding for fun and profit. Nothing to do but collect eggs and train my new pet duck. I'll be bored by Monday so maybe a few turkeys? Anyone have some poults for sale?

Of course not, friendly banter between friends is fine. But I don't think you or I would just walk up to someone on the street that you've never seen before and said "Hey you! You got a big butt, now can I get directions to the nearest pizza joint?". And expect a friendly reaction.

WooHoo! First pip in the new #1588!

Exactly. And while I don't think Fresh should run off, perhaps a little melding with our culture instead of insisting everyone else meld with their expectations would be in order. As for the joking/being silly thing. One of the cruelest people I know once gleefully said to me "Hey you know you can say whatever you want to people and then just laugh and say that it's a joke and they can't call you on it!"

I think that tactic is BS - more BS than the honest stuff on this thread.

Perhaps we came down hard on Fresh but I think that went both ways.

Now, with that big butt you obviously know about pizza - know a good place?

Also, I have no idea what this means: WooHoo! First pip in the new #1588!

Please tell me so I can celebrate with you! I mean I'll celebrate with you anyway but I'd like to know why I'm getting beads.

Lol.....the #1588 is a tabletop incubator. Pipping is when the chick pokes the first little hole through the shell when they hatch. I have 15 on lockdown( the last three days before hatching when you stop turning the eggs.). They are due to hatch tomorrow, so this one is a little early:)
