What has been going on here on my little farm-

Ducky the muscovy is laying again in time to start saving the eggs to restart my farm! I have moved all the roos to their own pen, so the girls will be pure when I move the girls to the right roos in a week or so. Right now, I want them to get the egg production up and going well before breeding them as I got 1000 lbs of breeder feed from the feed mill the other day. Very good stuff. Hens lay well and chicks hatch out healthy. Spent only $177.00 on the feed.

I need to find a new job, and quit the dairy job. I am putting more money in the gas tank, instead into the bank. I earn on average a $100.00 a week, pay on average $75.00 on gas a week! I will never be able to buy the 20 acre land next to us at that rate. Applied at an animal hospital, hope to hear from them this week.

Gurt and Maisy might have piglets this week or the next! Lost another piglet. I think that one of the hogs laid on top of him, squashing him. Stoopid hogs! There is plenty of room in that pen! The pen is about 100 feet long and 50 feet wide. That is plenty of room for a large boar, 3 sows, 2 gilts, and now 4 of the 4 weeks old piglets!

Bella is not showing any sign of being close. She may well have a calf in June at this rate!

Working on expanding the 2nd pasture to 4 acres in size, instead 2 acres. The cows have eaten all the grass in the main pasture, as there is only 1 acre worth of grass in the 3 acre main pasture as most of it tilled up. I am almost done, just one more strand of barb wire to put up, but I have to help my dad clean up the mess at one of the rental houses tomorrow.

Helped plant over 10,000 strawberry plants at a strawberry farm yesterday. I have been working at that farm for 7 years now, picking berrys and hoeing the fields. I only work there during the berry season, so its not a year 'round job. But its a tasty job, for the berries are good to eat while picking them.

Let my CX free ranging today. Some will be ready to be processed in a few weeks!

Poor Buddy...

Actually it occurs to me that I haven't really seen him today. Did he find a nice mallard to run off with? Is he in the neighbors yard like everyone else seems to be (the geese were there when I came back from Opa's - well 5 of them. The other two are trying to brood the same nest. Sometimes side-by-side, sometimes on top of each other. Why are two geese brooding the same nest, but more importantly why does my yard apparently suck for every bird?!)? Is he napping in a shadow and not pursing anything with feathers, for a change? Is he stalking my (indoor, male) cat for loving - you know, just for the challenge?

My chicks are cracking me up. The new Banties from Opa are all huddled on one of the roosts (I have two 10 foot roosts in the coop - the banties are taking up... maybe a foot? 2? on one of them. I still can't believe how small they are and how they have no idea they're small) My young chicks, in their first night in the outside coop, are all huddled up in one corner on the ground. So much for learning from their elders. Scared? Cold? Dumb?

According to the forecast it seems we are in for a nice spell of good weather. I know that for some Monday's are a day to dread but I am always glad it's here. Monday is the day that the crossword puzzles are designed to make you feel intelligent. I know it doesn't seem like a big deal but anything that makes you feel good about yourself is something to appreciate.

Another thing that started my day off on a positive note was to discover a PM from the Scottish BYCer Highlander. She and I have developed a friendship over the past few years that entails phone calls and her becoming my darlin' daughter, even if she is a cyber one. She had noticed that I was on the site briefly this morning around 2am. She sent me a pm inquiring if I was okay. How can you not have a good day when you know people care about you.

Morning all! I've been busy and haven't been on here as much lately. Some very exciting news...my husband FINALLY found an awesome job (so long Walmart!!!) and starts on the 22nd. I've been working on my flower beds and yard lately and will be potting up plants for Chickenstock soon. Not sure if I'll have much in the way of Hostas because the frost damaged some of them so it will take a while for them to bounce back. Our rebuild of the coop project was put on hold due to lack of funds but I'm hoping we'll be able to at least get the new roof on this weekend because all we need are the two sheets of plywood...I already had an old roll of tar paper and a friend had a few extra bundles of shingles laying around. I really really need to get that coop up and running because I've got about 40 silkie/showgirl/speckled sussex chicks and no where to put them until it's done! Right now they're taking over my garage and just get to play outside when it's nice.
OH! I also figured out why my styrofoam bator I'm using for the lock down/hatching part of incubation isn't holding humidity. I gave up and figured it was because it was letting it out around the edges so I put two big Stephen King books on it and WALLA! Humidity is holding at 65! Eggs were wiggling last night so we'll see what pops out in the next couple days.
Yesterday we started prepping the garden...going to try a few new gardening ideas this year and I'm pretty excited because some of it will help cut back on weeding...which I HATE.
ChickenStock is right around the corner so if anyone has any requests for Silkies, Speckled Sussex or Showgirls PM me. (can also bring hatching eggs if anyone is interested but need a heads up!)

Good morning Michigan, sunny and breezy here but warm for a change. We could use rain, but really it is hard to complain about sun.

Opened the pop door in the little coop this weekend so that my Easter chicks can go out into their pen at will. there is a litte cadre of 6 or 8 that go in and out and love it, the rest remain lurking inside. I see one of the EO cockerels has a deformed leg, looks like he slipped a tendon and walks down on the hock. He seems fine otherwise, so hopefully he will grow big enough for the freezer without needing to be put down sooner. On of the new blue Orp babies had to be put down, it could not stand and kept it's head curled underneath all the time - too bad, it was the biggest and fluffiest of them all.

Good Morning!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day. I headed to the East side of the state to spend the afternoon with my mom. We got her a Kindle so we had to spend a little extra time showing her how to use her new technology (she doesn't have a smart phone...so the training session went extra long

)

Since it rained on Saturday I wasn't able to move the bunnies outside yet. ARG. Way to many animals in the house. 4 bunnies, 3 dogs...I need a break from all the hair!

I peaked into the brooder yesterday and quite a few of my Easter hatchlings are looking rather roo-ish. ARG.
