Well, I do not watch horse racing. SO... no thrill there for me

Got the coops cleaned. Got a lower roost up so the chickens can get up on that one and then up to the high one. The lower, I am not to comfortable with them sleeping on until I put a protective wall there. They can get on it and all, but it is down by the fenced area and if a coon were to try and reach thru... SO, I have some more of that wood that I used to make the top part of the summer coop, I will install 2 small panels at both locations where it touches near the fence. Going to work at getting 2 more girls over there tonight, so I will be up to 6 pullets in the summer coop. Crossing fingers the 4 I put there last night will be there again tonight now that I have an easier way for them to get up there.

The ducklings... Geez, I hope they get used to me faster. I know I have only had them for 4 days, but holy freakness.

The little dinners LOVED being outside. They still are out right now. I hope they hop up in the coop on their own. I have the food and water back in there, so I think they will follow the Kibble Trail. I am going to scootch there coop over to a grassy area tomorrow, and give them about 5 more feet of fenced area. I know, WHOOPTY DOO five feet. Hey, five feet is a lot to those tiny little things.

VJ, I need a nice gate like that to my back yard. When can I expect you to be gone so I can steal yours? I need to plan this out, since you are quite a drive from me. Also, great award for your kids team.

Hahaha! They can look like anything because they're mutts. That said, we've always had good luck with the few EEs we've had. They've all laid eggs in the green to blue-green spectrum.

Maybe I should have prefaced my post with, "I know nothing about chickens"...

Okay Olive, that's quite enough.

It was easy to build, okay I have no idea since Brad built it. But it was just two treated 2x4's some left over fencing and a hinge/latch/handle set from Lowes that was $20. He has this awesome little Kreg jig I got him a few Christmas' ago that he loves using. It's a snazzy little gate!

I understand that EEs can look like anything really... SO, I do not have a yard full of mutts. I have a yard full of EEs, who will probably only lay brown, white, coco, tinted eggs...

I DID realize they are "mutt" chickens. I was just surprised to see how dang fluffy she is! I hope she keeps it because it's really soft and cute. Her muff is super fluffy too though. I think she's just a fluffy chicken.

Actually, some of my favorite eggs came from a BA/EE cross. They had the prettiest olive eggs, much better than the darker, more drab eggs that you get from the EE x Dark Egg Layers.

Got tired of waiting for DH to finish the run so figured I would just let them free range today. Those darn girls wouldn't come out the pop door for anything! Tried putting them out myself and as soon as I turned around to get another bird the one I had just put out would come right back in. Tried coaxing them with treats to no avail. Guess I will try again tomorrow.

Aww...I tried putting my one month old RIR and BA in with the big girls and although to my surprise they big chickens didn't even bat an eyelash at them, they were terrified! So after 2 days I put the littles back with Waffles and her banty crew. Maybe they will just hang out with the d'uccles, silkies and polish chickens? I don't really care as long as they are happy and give me eggs!

This is the scene I happened upon last night when I went to put away the bantys... Waffles is such a mama... and I think she's got the two other d'uccles following suit.

OK, stupid question. At what age can you put chicks out without a heat lamp? I don't have electric in my coop....... Is it warm enough being in the high 50's?????????

Either my chicks are cold, or terrified of the dark..... (everyone else is panting) Anyone else ever have a batch of chicks be scared of the dark? I have never had this happen.
