Does anyone know what this is? I found it on a milkweed plant last summer.
I know my bugs! I had to help my son with a 4 -H project that involved a bug collection. Anyway it's a difficult one .....Red Milkweed Beetle.

My BO went broody 2 days ago, have her sitting on 6 EE eggs and one of her own(I think) Hope they all hatch,,,, last year we only had 1 hatch, yr. before they were all hatching and I had to give some away.....Grand kids come up today, it ha been so cold the temp in the pool has dropped,,,,, they LOVE the water so they may still go in

some one said they had a Great Pyrenees (sp) they big herd dog I had looked into them but it said they bark all the time and are very hard to train, Come is not in their vocabulary? do you find that to be true?
I have had several Great Pyrenees and I love them. I have had some that bark a lot and some that don't. In my opinion, they are very easy to train. Mine always came when they were called. Mine have always been guard dogs to the sheep so if they did bark I welcomed it. They can hear and see a lot farther than I can so I always figure they hear something.

It is amazing what two days of rain will do to green things up. Today it is supposed to get a little sunny, which probably means that the lawn mower will have to come out again. cut my bird population by 6 yesterday, little boy blue and his 2 girlfriends went to live with another pair of bantam lav am hens - he will be in heaven. And taprock came by with her son and husband and picked up 3 birds for 4 h projects. 6 less mouths to feed!

Every morning I check the progress of the Decorah Iowa eagles. Started watching before the first egg was laid. Watched as she sat through snow storms. Saw a raccoon get a lesson the the inadvisability of entering an eagle's nest. There is something about bald eagles that keeps me checking to see the progress of our national symbol. The entire time has been fascinating and the 3 eaglets will soon be leaving the nest. I witnessed their growth from down covered eaglet to full grown birds. The past week they have been tk onrying their wings and have recently started "branching". They take short flying hops to a nearby limb and then back to the nst. Currently all 3 are sitting on the edge of the nest and I know that they will soon be gone. While the whole process has been fascinating to watch I can't help but feel a little sad that I will no longer be able to check up on them. I guess that too are about to graduate.

Speaking of graduates, I'd like to congratulate all of you who have reached such an important juncture in your lifes. Well done. Go forth and prosper.

Really? They forage that well? Wonderful! I've got 6 pullets coming in next week's order along with a slew of Dark Cornish, 4 BLRW and 3 Buckeyes. I've been looking for good foragers My feed bill I don't want to think about! I just keep trying out breeds till I find one I really, really like! I don't hold out much hope for my Blue Andalusians as foragers and the Golden Buffs I simply got for the eggs.
One of my Dominiques. Other than that, they are amazing, I don't feed them a thing and they ar fat.
Goodness, I'm still in my bathrobe. I was awake at 7 am, seem to be snapping awake about then everyday lately. I suppose I should get moving. Besides which DH plans to butcher a duckling today. I have to clear kitchen space for him.
I took my dogs to the field this morning. They ran til they wore themselves out, I tolerated it well- only one mosquito found me while I was there.
I've read that you really need a fenced yard with them, not that they'll run off, but they'll try to incorporate everything in the area into the place they protect. I'm guessing neighbors might find that annoying.

Finally stopped raining and the sun is peeking through the clouds. As I said, DH is going to whack one of the muscovies, says he may do it while I'm walking the dogs, or at least out of my sight. They're tasty but too **** cute for my own good. I'm really thinking of doing away with my whole duck thing and just keeping guineas and chickens. So if anyone is interested in a mate pair about 2 years old, let me know. Time to get going, Ziggy is scratching at the front door.

Turkling!

Hopefully it will survive, the tom keeps trying to mate its mom and isn't particular about where he steps. I'm wondering if I should try to pen him or something.

Baby turkey is ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ive planted a bunch, now decided I need to wait and do something mundane like fold laundry. Every time I put the shovel to the dirt, I get a pounding headache right behind my left eye. Not good. I think I will listen to myself and take a break.
Its starting to look green out there in my secret garden!!!!
So far *not all today, of course*:
Ive planted yellow sedum, red sedum, woolly thyme, red creeping thyme, some other kind of thyme, lemon balm, russian sage, red sage-or some kind of sage that gets red flowers, greek oregano, ivy...peppermint, shasta daisies, bee balm, asiatic lilies (orange), tickseed- or something similar, clematis, morning glories, lavender, red black-eyed susans, hostas, milkweed (and monarch babies), ferns, and those red spiky annuals.

Husband mowed the front lawn, walks in the backyard and said- "why is it my job seems so much harder than yours?"....

Haha, I am with your husband, I HATE mowing the lawn. Especially since I have a huge swath which needs mowed, with a push mower. My father hogs the ride on mower downstate, to mow a lawn the size of a postage stamp. It is good exercise, don't get me wrong. But it takes at least four hours to get it all mown, talk about tiring!
