Oh, and does anyone farm meal worms for their flocks?

I was thinking about it and there is a lot of information on the thread dedicated to worm farming. Thought it might help through the winter months...

Hi Fam, and welcome to BYC and the Michigan threadfrom northern Michigan :D

That woman seriously wants just one chick? And what is she going to do with it when it is no longer small and cute in oh - 8 weeks? Some people should not have animals.

For all your gardening needs: unicorns!

Awwwwwwww!!! What a cutie!!! She can come play in my garden any time!! These are the cute kinda pictures that are neat to see when they're all grown up!
I personally think an Uggo would make a great "Stay Off Drugs" mascot..

I agree...they look like they've been recovered from drug abuse for oh, 5 minutes LOL A bunch of mine are going through the ugly phase right now...can't wait till they are all feathered in. I'm going to bring my pullet "Q-tip" to chickenstock to show everyone how pretty Showgirls can be...she's soooooo cute.
Overall, give me your opinion.
What breed is the broodiest?
Oh man, my silkie hens are driving me NUTS right now!!! It's like this --->

Darn birds won't even stand up if I take them out of the box...they sit there and look around like "well how the heck did I get down here?! this isn't my nest!!"

Chicks are poppin' out this morning for the end of this weeks hatch. I have 4 more hatches and then I'm done for the year....maybe lol. I'm going to be getting rid of one of my Speckled Sussex roosters though. I've noticed my hatch rates have been down a little lately with the sussex and I think I know why after watching the birds last night. If one of the roos mounts a hen the other one judo-ninja-chickens him off the hen as quickly as possible.

So that means one has to go...which stinks cause I like them both for different reasons. Hoping to find him a new home this saturday at the swap...otherwise it's off to the sale with him!
Welcome to the new members of the group!!! I stopped at a random house on my way home yesterday (because I knew they had chickens...I'd seen them running around thier yard) and dropped off a flyer for CS. She was excited because they had lost almost all thier chickens to something and needed to start over. She said they'll probably be coming!!!

Hi Jen!

The talk about locked keys reminded me of a few years ago I stopped at a rest stop in Missouri where I came upon a lady who had left her car keys on her passenger set while she took items from her purse. When the purse was arranged she got out, locked the doors, and went inside. When she came out she remembered that her keys were on the car seat.

My friend Bob and I found her on the verge of tears wondering what to do. Upon evaluating the situation we found she had left a rear window down about 1 inch. Since we were headed south for a fishing trip we had fishing rods. I placed a small treble hook on one and proceeded to fish for her keys. Since from my vantage point I couldn't see the keys so Bob stood on the other side to direct me. It wasn't easy to snag the keys and it must have taken at least 15 or 20 minutes to do so. In the interim it was amazing the number of fellow travelers who offered suggestions as to the location of much better fishing locales.

OK, I am bringing down my wrath upon all my broodies. Well, not really. BUT I just put three of them in my new BROODY BUSTING cage. A big dog kennel with a wire floor (and surpringly the floor space is perfect for chicken feets to walk on. They're in there with food, water, and are shaded and protected from rain.

only got 1 chick last yr and this yr. my broody is sitting again and I just candled the eggs and 1 possibly 2 look good, I will candle again tonight when it is darker. pretty sure the spot in there should not be floating around.
My MIL swears by this and I got this as an email from someone else... So have any of you tried it?? With horses/ in a barn? Might be worth a try...

ZIP LOCK BAG - Good tip!
I am going to try this ,does it matter what size bag you use?? lg. or small

was going to write a note and remembered I don't have your address.
Have a great and safe trip

first time chicken owner question..... when do you switch to layer feed, after then start laying or before and if before at what age? TSC and local feed store give me different answers so yours would be greatly appreciated.

Brethern,

Silkies are very very broody. My broodiest.

1muttsfan,

I think they would be best with a stuffed chicken.

Exactly.

I have my first ever broody Delaware, and she is SERIOUS.

When they are around 20 weeks old, their combs are brightening up, and they start acting interested in the laying boxes. A lot of them will start squatting in front of you (or the rooster) as well. This is called Point of Lay.

Thanks for the info, the breast meat only weighed 1.25 pounds and I think we can do better.

Aren't sugar gliders tiny flying squirrels? That's what I seem to be remembering here.
We have butchered at around 18 weeks and they are just as good. When you think they look and feel big enough for your needs, then they are ready.

Side note: We just bought our very first pair of female sugar gliders. They are really cute and have this outrageous sound when they get nervous. Ill try to remember to put pictures up tomorrow.
I saw this at a restaurant on Cape Cod last year. Only they didn't bother with pennies, just clear quart sized plastic bags of water. I must admit, it was a nice fly free outdoor patio by the water. I wonder if this would work for deer flies? If I hung a bag from my baseball cap and put one on each dog's collar, would we be left alone while walking in the swamp?
