Here is a little story from the backyard (apologies to Mrs Chickendad for stealing her method!)

Timmy Down the Well
The little Basque pullet, along with all her brothers and sisters, had recently moved from the Little Chicken Pen to the Big Chicken Pen next door. There were many Big Chickens that were not happy to have Little Chickens constantly underfoot, but there were so many that is was too confusing to try to punish them for their constant childish behavior. Who could tell all those Little Chickens apart?

One day Food Person Number 1 came out to the coop with a basket. Was it grass? Was it treats? No – it was peeping. She took the basket contents and placed them under Big Momma the broody Delaware, who was pretty crabby even when not broody and was unapproachable now (several of the Little Chickens had found this out the hard way). She pecked furiously at FP#1, until she felt the little chicks moving under her bloomers. Nothing else mattered after that. FP#1 sat down to watch for a while to make sure that Big Momma did not change her mind about the newcomers, when she heard a faint rustle and thump.

She had heard that noise 2 days earlier, but after looking around figured it was the Little Chickens on the outside of the coop being chastised by the Big Chickens. This time it sounded closer – and then she heard it again. After retrieving a flashlight she inspected around the laying boxes. At the side along the wall was a narrow, 3 ½" gap between the studs. And at the bottom of the hole was little Basque pullet.

Food Person Number 1 reached as far as her arms allowed, but could not touch little Basque pullet. Several attempts at rescue involving a narrow rake, a board, and a broom handle also failed – little Basque pullet was really wedged in. Finally FP#1 was able to lasso her head, and pull her up far enough to grab her by the neck and pull her out of the dark hole. Ouch! Peep Peep!

My what a mess! Stinky poop all over, feathers askew, stiff legs and wings. She peeped her misery to FP#1, who took her in the Big House and unkindly held her down in the sink under running water until the poop was all washed off. After she was toweled dry, FP#1 put bowls of food and water in the sink. That was much better! She was very hungry.

Still so stiff she could hardly stand, she was bedded down in the Garage in a plastic tote next to a big box of even Smaller Chicks. By morning she was standing better, although listing off to the side when she walked. Food Person Number 1 took her back out to the Little Chicken Pen and put her in with some of her little Cochin friends. There were some new Little Chickens in there too, a motley crowd of six Dorking chicks, one of whom immediately challenged her right to be in the Little Chicken Pen. Well! She promptly trounced the pushy little fellow, despite her recent travails. She felt so much better after that, she fluffed all her feathers and settled down for a good preening.

Guess I’ve got a pullet named Timmy now.

To continue.

I have been working to get a garden set up in some plots rented from a local farmer who is also a teacher here and a former student of mine. His paw is Ben Scholl Who is famous hereabout As a user of draught horses, and an advocate of same. I'll bet some of yall have heard of him (if you don't know him) He had a pulling horse competition on the farm annually for many years. Ben is to be 90 years of age this month and is retired. Wonderful family.

Stew, the son is a super person. Yesterday he hosted a race RUNNING PEOPLE . I don't know what the purpose was, but there were hundreds of folks there fron what looked like toddlers to old folks, running races in the heat . Some baby types were carried on the shoulders or in the arms of parents or grandparents. I was impressed. Can't remember the nameof the event but it seemed to be advocating running. Stew was an excellent distance runner in H S. and college. Coached X-country too. Runs about everywhere he goes on the farm.

I digress, but that seemed more interesting than what I planted in the garden there.
Tomatoes (Roma, Better Girl, and a few others) Green bush beens, Three types of sweet corn, Brussel sprouts, Late dutch Flat Head Cabbage, Anothe cabbage called Late, Radishes, Rutabegga, Zuccini and yellow summer squash, Acorn Squash, Jack o lantern Pumpkins, Kohlrabbi, Sugar Baby Wmellon, Honey Rock Cantaloupe (from seed I saved) , Another "saved seed" mellon, Petunias, Marigolds,Zinnias,Cauliflower, and Broccoli. I think that's it for there. More in our yard too.

I plan to can, freeze, dry, and store somme stuff in the cold storage room in basement. Usually about 40 degrees F there in winter.

I'll try to post picts when they show something.

A fwe days ago Bertha, our alpha hen, mounted one of the other hens, Did the wing flap thing, pecked her on the back of the head and Went on her way. Just a way to show dominance????

Our strawberries are a bust this year. Froze. Last year 60 - 70 quarts, this 4 -5Qt.

Bry missed six days of egg collections, then gathered 27 eggs from two nests after booting two hens who did not object at all. Think we outta collect more often?

Posting is like saving for me......

Fed the uggos some treats! Showed the neighbor girls. They were semi interested. They would rather steal the rocks out of my tiki torch base

I did not show them the baby babies cause they are so little and the girls are somewhat "manhandlers"

the bleeding hearts are rare I have never seen them in a catalog, I got them from a dear friend she is 94 now and has supplied more gardens with plants then you can imagine. she gives with the instruction to pass on any surplus. I will bring some to CS my duty to Alice.I have a garage full of dug up plants right waiting for my daughter she puts them out on her veggie stand. (needs the extar $$)
Please save a shoot for me too! Those are gorgeous! And I'd be sure to pass on Alice's legacy.

Absolutely! Be warned though, he will tear your hens up something fierce. They tear up LF hens, can't imagine how bald and rode-hard-put-away-wet an uggo (or other smaller) hen would look. If they don't submit you're also probably going to have injuries due to his weight and strength. When you're ready, let me know. I'll bring the beans and rice.... and FLAN! You know you want flan.

My sister is back in the hospital again. The injury to her liver that she got during her "routine" gall bladder surgery, is not healing. She's continuing to drain high amounts of bile from her shunt tubes, and now her protiens are at dangerous levels.Shes so week and in so much pain, can't eat anything. She's been on a liquid diet, and now not even able to keep that down, its returning undigested. She's lost 20 pounds in the last week alone from it.SO, they are going to cut her open, the BIG one and "FIX" it. How the hell can they F up so bad that they nearly kill a person! And then still do not fix it right after the second, third, and now will be the fourth surgery to "FIX" the "OOPSY!"

She sent her BF for a lawyer.
Oh no! Man, what the hell? I'll be praying for her and I'm glad she's got a lawyer to protect her interests.

There are many breeds that require AI for high rates of fertilization. If you look on YouTube there are videos showing the process.

Tonight is the council meeting regarding chickens in Garden City. One councilman was quoted in the paper as saying he wouldn't mind chickens as long as they are "properly caged". WTH?
The paper also has the proposed wording for the amended ordinance and it is asinine. They want a permit, a application fee, an inspection by an as of yet unidentified entity, renewal of permit each year and a ban of sharing the eggs with anyone outside the property.

Even though the council is open to allowing chickens, I think they need some education on chicken keeping and a lot better wording of the ordinance..
Wishing you luck Raz.

Being part of a local government board myself, I can see that they may be trying to protect themselves liability wise. BUT it seems a bit excessive.
I am of the frame of mind that government is not in place to micro manage it's constituents and it pisses me off when they try. I'm probably the worst "Politician" ever. I'm very much a "For the People" sort of girl. Not an agenda driven one but people must see that because I've had my position for 7 years now and will be re-elected this fall(no one is running against me) to another 4 year term!

what I bring will be free, part of spreading Alice T's gardens
will continue to pray for her......my daughter had a simple surgery go bad,,,tried to get a lawyer .....some one told us later, try to get some one out of the city, most lawyers in the area are in the hospitals back pocket just a thought..
properly caged? what do they think chickens will do jump out and attack passing bi-standers??? do they say how many you may have?
most likely won't be enough to share a lot of eggs any how.......well good luck, sounds like they need some proper chicken education
Hope we get some rain too, haven't had any for a week or more and it is DRY

Please save me one! Thank you!!
