On hot days I sometimes pop some apples or other fruit in the freezer, and by the hotter parts of the day, they are frozen. The chickens then get this chilled treat! A temporary fix to the heat, but they sure do enjoy it! It is like ice cream for chickens. Access to ample shade and fresh water is essential, though.

I've also made some oatmeal, then frozen it as well. It takes them a while to eat their frozen oatmeal. I just make it in a plastic container so I can pop it out easily for them.
Do you use old fashioned oatmeal? That you cook?
Well now, that is a very nice faucet!

Thanks for the advice Ladies! My chickens don't truly free range but they have so much space we call it that. They also have some huge willow bushes they spend most of their time in during the day. I may try the sled thing though.

Do you have barn cats? We have 5 outside cats that kill, unfortunately, everything...squirrels, voles, mice, rabbits, chipmunks, birds. They climb TREES and take things out of nests too. And yea, they always have cat food available.

My dog would have a field day with cats, she would want to round them up then eat them.

Good luck to hubby today!!

Wow, that's incredible. What a horrible loss. My coop has so much open space and big ventilation areas but on hot days the temp still soars in there. I don't know what to do about it. Should we get one of those small attic type fans and attach it to the cupola area to pump out the heat?

I can tell everyone on here cause I don't think you will ruin the surprise for anyone I know BBBBBUUUUTTTT.....

No, no, no.

1) They'd just be living squeak toys for the dogs.
2) Cats are nasty, rotten things. Pee and poo wherever the heck they want. I like my garden fresh tomatoes without a side of toxoplasmosis, thankyouverymuch.

We used to have a house cat, he was a good boy. I'm convinced he -- and cats like him -- are the exception rather than the rule. We've tried four other cats in the past 7 years or so and none of them have worked out -- every last one either peed or pooped where it shouldn't. I don't like cats to begin with, so I'm not inclined to give any more a chance. I'd rather feed a legion of voles than smell cat pee or find cat poo buried in my garden.
Yeah, I can see why you'd have that feeling. Lol

Sky getting darker, rumbling off in the distance, a quick check of the Weather Channel's satelite map shows that we are fixing to get a frog strangler is just a few minutes. The forecast was for isolated thunderstorms and I guess God picked us for this one.

It is starting to cloud up to the north of me. I sure hope we get a nice soaking rain. We got less than 1/4" here yesterday.

Last night was fun...had to do some duck hunting after sunset for 2 wayward ducklings. With nothing more than a dim flashlight and bare hands, I was able to capture the run-aways. It was jolly good fun in the dark.

Today I will build an "escape-proof" area for them in the tent coop. And while I'm at it, a nice habitat for Sebastian.
