Today Hal and I will be going one of his younger brothers and his wife on the ancient yet very functional pontoon boat, decked out in stars and stripes, on Hubbard Lake. I am bringing hot dogs, we shall be grilling on board as we tool around the lake looking at all the lovely properties and dreaming how nice it would be to live in one of them during the summer. Probably somewhere along the southern edge we shall anchor and play in the water for a bit, eat those hot dogs and then tool about the lake some more. We did this last year and had a great time. We even stayed and watched the minimal fire works we could see over the tree tops. No idea if we're staying that late this year, but I'm prepared, Oh, I best go find my sparklers!

My dogs I will be leaving with my neighbor where they can all huddle together when the noise starts. A couple of her dogs really get antsy, my current two not as bad as my old dog (RIP). In fact Ziggy has been going outside every night this week and barking at the sounds. Silly boy, doesn't he know he's supposed to cower?

My birds are all heavily watered, fed and well shaded. Prediction is 91 today, already 80, with a slight breeze. I feel the humidity will be dropping. Everyone enjoy your day.

Harrisville, the county seat. I'm 22 miles west of there. Got a couple of pretty good restaurants and a state park right on Lake Huron. Just north of there is Negewegon State Park, a nice primitive secluded seasonal road access park on Lake Huron. Probably will be taking the pups there for a visit with my neighbor's family a couple times this summer. Can walk straight out for quite a way before it gets deep.

Happy 4th all. No fireworks going to be shot off here (at the home, I mean) tonight. Too dry, and one dog is terrified of fireworks. She is fine with thunderstorms, but at the sound of a mere firecracker she dissolves into a shaking, drooling, peeing, cowering mess (all while she tries to claw her way to hide under a person, then when she gets crated, barks nonstop). So yea, no fireworks preserves our sanity.

Just in from a break putting up fencing. Whew. My father and I are working as a team, and it is getting done fast. But it is humid and hot, and we're going through gallons of icewater like it was air.

Happy 4th everyone! Off to Lake Michigan! When we get there, I am going to jump in the lake and stay there! Its too hot out! Its suppose to be almost a 100 degrees! :th

How FooFoo is doing...

well, he isnt dead. He is not better. But, he didnt read the book that said 'after twenty four hours, if they have not recovered they are brain-dead."
When I pick him up, today he is actively able to eat the Nutrical I offer, and actively able to drink from a waterbottle. had some trouble getting pellets, though. He can move his head around well.
He is starting to move his legs just a little.

So, we are going to wait it out and see what happens. I gave him 50 cc more of subq fluids.

87 degrees and it isn't even noon yet. I hope you all have a way to keep cool today. Weatherbug says that the heat index will be 108 here today. I'll be checking on the flock and other critters often.

I raked the run and the soil is holding moisture from yesterday's rain so the chickens seem happy.
Pulled Pepper the Uggo off the nest and she is NOT happy.

Awhile back there was some discussion of open-air coops in our region. I'm pretty sure I'd worry too much about having layers in one during the winter, but what about putting meaties in one? DH and I (and BIL) are plotting to try to raise meaties in the spring and need an affordable way to house them. (And have any of you raised FRs?)

I'm also looking for a source for non-GMO and/or organic feed in the Cadillac/Traverse/Manistee area if anyone knows of one......I'm striking out so far
Northwoods Feed in Cadillac has organic chicken feed on their sign. Phone # 231-779-9883.
