Man, that really sucks. I went out early in the afternoon, put frozen 20 oz bottles in all the waterers, hosed down the pens, misted the crap out of everything for a while, trees, coops, hidey holes... Everyone ran like hell, but then they all settlled in under the bushes, coop... All are good.
I never thought of putting frozen water bottles right into the waterers. That is a heck of an idea! I will have to get a few frozen tonight. Thank you. I have been doing what I can for the birds..changing the water a few times a day, shade, a fan on them. To say this heat has been brutal is an understatement.

Yep, they were CX. I knew it would be a gamble with July heat but MI is almost never this hot for this long. I'm going to keep them in the garage with fans, freezer packs, and ice blocks in their water. I had them separated in three groups and the one group just piled on top of each other and roasted in one big pile. The same thing happened in the other group but on a smaller scale. Been keeping everyone hosed down and shaded but it's amazing how fast things can happen in this heat.

It has been so hot the past couple of days. Tonight we are even going to the extreme and leaving the birds in their runs and not their coops and taking shifts to watch out for predators. That is what I call dedication! :)

Ive had the sprinkler on the chicken yard all day. I just checked on the girls- all are tucked into their sleeping spots- the Notmeatie is wet, the others stayed out of the sprinkler, but she must not have. No deaths, no collapses. Good.

Bunny Foofoo is still with me. Slowly improving, cant say he has improved any further than this morning, maybe some more movement to his back legs- but not enough to actually move himself. I have been keeping ice with all the buns.. in the house. Its HOT in here. Very hot in here. Definitely cooler outside now than it is inside. The storm that almost was, well it brought about a ten degree drop that is very good.

I have fans on the bunnies. Tricky with Foofoo. He cant move away or next to his ice pack- so I have it about an inch from him to cool him off with a fan blowing across him.

Those of you who are using the Duke DP traps might find you can improve your catch rate if you place a white Styrofoam cup with the bottom removed over the trap. Since coons are curious creatures the white helps draw their attention to it.

Another type of dog proof trap that is much easier to set, does no damage to the captured animal, and is easy to release is available from www.Cooncollector

Sorry for your loss on the meaties- jrsckn

I was only able to stay in the lake for about 40 minutes for I had to go to work. :he It was miserable at work for it was so hot, that I was sweating non-stop for the whole time. Came home with a pounding headache. So hate the heat, can't wait for fall!

Did anyone wonder why the sky look hazy the past few days? Here is the answer- http://www.accuweather.com/en/home-...-and-you/smoke-from-western-wildfires-r/67522

Thanks= I took it differently. I was thinking that Olive was saying that raccoons were walking around like typhoid mary. I also didn't realize that an animal could pass rabies before it was actually sick with the disease.

My midwife always told me that three biggest causes of headaches were:

1.) Not enough water.
2.) Not enough iron.
3.) Not enough protein.

I get headaches often, and before I take an ibuprofen I first try drinking a large glass of water, taking a vitamin, and getting some protein, which can be as simple as a handful of peanuts. It almost always works, (provided it is "just" a headache and not a migraine, and provided it is not caused by lack of coffee...)

Make sure you are drinking lots and lots of water, it is very easy to get dehydrated in the heat.
