Possibly an injury that took a while to manifest. The chick was trampled, right? Could have been a very, very slow internal bleed, or something like that. Some chicks can bounce back, others, not so much. Sorry for your loss.
thanks, yeah it stinks.

Chimmy,Hewie is doing fine .Your daughter told my wife his name was Hewie.
YAY!!! Yes, my daughter named him Huey..he became Chimi after Olive kept refering to him as Chimichangas..lol. But she called him Huey while he was here.
Gads, people. Enough with the booms already. Yeah, I know there is a lake behind us and all, but it's no longer the fourth. My goats are not liking all the firecrackers. They jump at every one, poor things. If it's not the heat, it's the big scary booms out of nowhere.

Mom2- sorry your little chick didn't make it after all you did for it
AMEN! It sounds like I am living in the middle of combat...big ole booms and bottle rockets and every other imaginable firework here in the neighborhood. Last night was much worse than tonight, probably because everyone finally ran out of money. BUT, the big fireworks sellers around here have them as "BUY one get five free" right now...so could go on and on for awhile.

:( Im sad for my little chick too. I thought it was going to be fine after it made a comeback.

My cocks tail is about 6 foot long and to transport him , which I will be doing in the next week, we build a small pen around the bird using plywood for the bottom and chicken wire around the bird to hold him still with his tail hanging freely out the back. No injury to bird or tail.
Will you take a picture and post? I saw a pic on the thread that Nova posted that sounds pretty much like what you are describing. I figure I can make that, but pics sure would help.

All my animals made it. I am happy, but i feel sad because i know that many others had losses. I am sure there were a lot of human casualties, too. :( Pretty pooped now from the long hours and the heat.

I still feel wimpy because i needed the AC, but it made me able to keep food in. I am going to look into what vitamins are related to heat sickness, so i am prepared next time! I know that zinc is related to sweating, so i know whatever i take will have to have a full amount of that..... I think magnesium, zinc, and potassium?
I wonder if there are special herbs?

Going to get some sleep, hopefully tomorrow will be an easy day!

Wish I had a pool

Got my very first egg today from one of EE's, they are 17 weeks old. The second picture shows it compared to a store bought egg.

Well now we know how you got her to lay the egg...chasing those poor pullets around with a whoopee cushion!! LOL Ok, now everyone on here should know by now that we all look past what you're trying to show us in the picture and find something more entertaining to pick on you about

Lots of "fun stuff" the last few days...
~ my loving children gave me a bug that made me think I was dying and had me...well, nevermind I won't go into details..

~ my broody silkie is still sitting strong and after candling the eggs again I think I might let her keep them because they don't seem to be fried like I thought they were from the heat. However she has pooped all over them...not sure what to do about that?

~ last night I was tending to the garden when it was about dusk (but still very light out) and my hens started "bagoking"...no biggy, they do that. I didn't even look up. Then I heard my speckled sussex rooster bagocking...I LOOKED UP. (he never does that, it's beyond him to sound like a pansy lol) My chicks who are in the remodelled coop-in-progress were plastered to the farthest spot in the x-pen runs as they could possibly be and everyone else was acting like the sky was falling! I started running down the hill from the garden to the coops when I saw something run behind the rabbit barn and I ran that way and heard it running up the oak trees...a RACCOON!! ARGH!!

Soooooo....(mooohooohahahaha) I went all Annie Oakly on it.

Got my 22G and blasted away into the tree...then realizing there was a FAMILY of them! Big HUGE momma and 3 football sized babies. So I ran to the coop and said "Come with me if you want to live"...wait, scratch that, wrong movie...I ran into the house and got more ammo and took care of them. Well, one disapeared into the tree after I shot it but I'm pretty sure I got it. I've got my live trap set now. None of my birds were injured thanks to the combined bagocking of every chicken on the farm! Best part was that the neighbors up the road from me on the other side had a clear view of me blasting away at a tree and every time I took a shot they screamed that they surrendered! HAHAHAHA!

All my rabbits made it through the heat just fine too...even got some cleaning done in the barn tonight since it cooled down so nice out.

Good Morning everyone!
Finally my house is cooled down..

Drinking coffee, getting a start on the day here. I have much to do. Something has to be outside trying to get in my yard because my dogs wont let me sleep- they keep going out and barking their heads off...when I bring them in, they want right back out there. I dont see anything, but I figure they know what they are talking about. Right now my pit is camped out at the fence, and the scaredy cat Golden is at the back door.

Fuzzybuttt and Jennie, I am glad you are both feeling better. Good job, Jen for being Annie Oakley!! YAY for no losses feathered or furred.
Fuzzybutt I am glad all your chickens and YOU made it through the heat. Im not sure what helps the body through extreme heat, seems electrolytes are important- but if you find something specific, please share. I cannot tolerate heat well without getting sick either.

Thank you also for talking to me while sick- bunny has made a full recovery. :) Now, to teach the three vets that all told me 24 hours is the 'cut off' time to give the rabbits a chance for longer and see if the 80% fatality rate doesnt decrease to maybe 50%...

My creeper neighbor in the back was peeking over the fence!! The one that my dog hates directly behind us! I was hanging fly traps- so exciting over here, hahaha..and I saw the top of his head. I thought, "I know you arent THAT tall"(privacy fence)...Not a bird in sight in my backyard. he had a chair back there he was standing on. They havent seen my yard (that I know of) since it was a dried up swamp. So, big change. Maybe he was hopiing that I would appear with more eggs or something. I dunno. He disappeared before I could say anything to him. Creepy.
