I mentioned that one of my ISA Browns laid a speckled egg the other day. Well, today I got 6 eggs from 7 "known" layers. My BLA did not lay today and I'm pretty sure that the broody Uggo isn't laying. What I did get was a very dark brown egg with no speckles at all.

So either another ISA is laying or the speckled egg was an oddity. The size and weight are consistent with the Uggo eggs and the first ISA egg.

I live in Battle Creek...wondered if anyone lives close by us? We are new to chickens, this will be our first full year with our hens and we have LOVED evey minute of it!! Okay, slight exaggeration as cleaning the coop is necessary but an over-rated experience, lol. I am curious to know how adding a rooster could increase flock security. Sometimes the girls just loosly wonder the yard and I feel like I have to be extra vigilant to keep them together and safe....a tiring job at best. Is it true that the roosters will keep his girls rounded up and return them to the coop in a fashionable manner??

It's almost the tiniest one's second birthday, put the finishing touches on one of her gifts today and wanted to share them with you guys. I still have a lot to do on her other gift, and I need to get a move on!! But, one down, whew! They are far, far from perfect, but luckily my critics aren't very harsh.

I haven't had my chickens long but I have 3 groups of chickens that all free range together during the day...
One group is younger than the others (EEs) and tend to stay away from the others because they get picked at. These girls stay together and go to there "coop" in the garage at night together.
I have BRs (3), with a roo, all under 12 weeks and they stick together
I have Showgirls (4) 13 weeks, not sure how many roos in that group yet... for sure 1, that stick together.
BRs and SGs go in the same coop at the same time.
So... No roo in the youngest girls and they still tuck themselves in at 8:45 every night!

I hope someone else has experience pre and post roo for you

Raz... Word on the street is that the house on the corner is going up for sale... you know for when you get tired of the crazies!!!
I've been tired of the crazies for quite some time. I'd sell and move in a heartbeat if I could.
Somewhere far from Detroit metro area or better yet, out of state.

BYFM - I wasn't sure how well I pulled off green, I keep thinking of that one as "Swamp Thing" Lol

Raz, We get speckled eggs off and on from a few of our chickens. It isn't a consistent thing, though I wish it was! They are like party time. I read it described somewhere that they have a paint sprayer in the system that applies the colour / coating to the shell, and you essentially get speckled eggs when there are clogs.

Or something like that. I fell asleep getting the kids to bed and just woke up and wandered out to turn off lights and feed the aquatic animals, so I am pretty tired and out there. Imma go back to bed.

Welcome NativeBeauty

Nova - Don't let me forget to send you a picture of the mini mushroom bowling set I am working on now, I think you may need to pick up the supplies for that while you're at Hobby Lobby

And thank you some more to those that complimented the dolls, I can't wait to give them to her, good thing she is easy to please, lol. I like the fact that they are, in addition to being toys, something to work on colour recognition with, matching, motor skill development, uh.. stuff... okay, I'm asleep.

Oh yeah, and Fuzzy, thank you! I will not get the spray then and now I know where to look for the other stuff.

And Snowflake, I forgot to say Happy Anniversary!

And welcome back to ChickenGrandma and SillyChicken! :)

And where the heck is Opa?
