I have a question that I know has been discussed here many times but as usual, it's one of those things I didn't pay attention to because it didn't affect me at the time.

How old is too old for chickens to be butchered to eat? I have some chickens I want to thin out. I'm not sure if they're still laying and I don't have time to figure it out. I want to sell them really cheap or give them to my nephew if he'll take them when he picks up chicks this weekend. I know some are around 4 years old and the rest are between 2-3 years old.

I guess I'm seeing just about every plant on the toxic list, and I'm wondering how concerned I should be about them having access to this plant in their run.

Amy, we have a lot of Lily of the Valley that our chickens free range around and we haven't had any issues. I think I would be concerned about having them in the run, though... while there are lots of plants they don't bother while out and about, they pretty well decimate every living thing in the run. Because Lily of the Valley can be fatal, and is pretty serious even if it isn't, and all parts of the plant are poisonous - stems, leaves, flowers and berries - I don't think I would be comfortable with it in the run, or within chicken reach from the run.

Thanks Juise! I appreciate the response. So, I'm good at planting things, but don't know much about taking things out. Anyone have experience clearning lily of the valley? If I dig down 6" or so, will I get all of the roots? I might just have to find a different perfect spot.

Well the little dinners are dropped off. Some one dropped off a turkey with broken legs. I was very upset about that. Mr. Kapenga said they person who brought it said it had broke the leg a week ago. I asked harpy only now was it being taken care off, and he told me that this was the only open slot they had. So, I said that's ridiculous, the owner should've done it himself then. Mr. Kapenga agreed. Some people.

Keyt, I have the understanding that when they get old, they make better jerky instead of roasted, grilled, souped...

Uggets... Hehe.

Kinda hard to tell which way is up!

lol ya, he's very poofy :)

I need one that rolls deviled eggs into my hand, ha ha!

I just missed you!
I got to see Jen today...and she and 2 others had the fun of trying to draw blood...out of a port no less! I always have to make things difficult when it comes to things like that lol. At least Jen didn't have to actually draw blood out of a vein, then she really would have been frustrated! lol
Oh well it was good to see ya Jenny!

It was nice to see both of you! :) Maybe we'll have to set up a day to get together! Robin if that cat eats those chicks I'll eat the cat! :) Keyt I couldn't help but slip that joke about flushing...every time we talk about flushing a port I always think they could come up with a better term! LOL Thankfully our Medsurg nurses are very persistant!

Well, tonight was productive. I got some of my hare (rabbit) cages put together so I can seperate out babies and one of my does is out there now having some more. I have the national convention coming up in October/November in Kansas so crossing my fingers there's some winners out there! Now I'm baking some chocolate chip cookies...mmmmmmmmmm

Uh ya, bake cookies AFTER I seen you !!!!! That cat is no longer around here lol.

Must be a baking night. I just finished making banana bread. Yum.

Spent a lot of time running around today taking kids to various appointments and such so DH tended the chickens for me. I'm pretty tired now, but I have a few things yet to do before calling it a day. The highlight of my running was the lab work for my daughter. She's not overly fond of getting her blood drawn and we thought she only had a couple orders being drawn for, but instead had 9. Needless to say, that knocked her off her feet for quite some time since only 2 can make her pretty woozy.

Well, I made a deal with my son so tomorrow is coop cleaning day. Once it's clean, I have a couple of new nest boxes to add for the growing group.

It is baking night!
I made butter pecan cupcakes and cake... MMMmmmmmm! With cool whip frosting!

Did everyone vote on the official poll on how many chickens we have?
