We no longer have basement birds! They moved in today. Here, our dog Greta helps us ensure the coop (thus far) is predator proof. She stayed there for 10 minutes, not moving a muscle.

Maybe there is some one here with more experience than I that can explain this to me... I was just on another thread, I like to see what I can learn... And a lady suggested filling a new mama's nest with ice... Let me back up. A first time broody has hatched out 2 of her 3 egg successfully between yesterday and today. One hatched and died. So, the mama hen has still not left the nest with the 2 surviving chicks to take them to the feeder that has been set up for them, oh what to do... a person suggested to take the chicks out of the nest, show them the food and water throw the broody off the nest and fill it with ice so she won't go back to it... Is there a valid reason to do something so stupid? The original poster was worried that the broody hen wasn't preforming as its her first time with this... I told her to leave the mama alone, nature knew what it was doing... But to fill a nest with ice?

I say take the chicks and throw them in the brooder and not worry about the hen doing her duty. Why take the chance of losing the chicks.

Thanks everyone for the advice on the poopy eggs! I checked on them tonight and quickly put them back once I candled a couple...because I saw major chick movement in a full egg...so I'm guessing chicks in the next day or two! She's sitting on Silkie, Showgirl and Sussex eggs...so should make for a cute group of chicks! I'm planning on throwing them in the brooder and putting her back in with the flock. She's a hardcore broody and I'd rather have her get back up to par on her own weight/condition and laying again then her taking care of the chicks.

Had crazy sprinkles here and there today... NOTHING to brag about!

I hope the vet will help you out. I wouldn't want to let him go knowing he would have a really hard time surviving. He could be very well adapt to it though too.
Good luck on Tuesday! I am sitting on the edge of my seat for you!

While I was cleaning out their pens I noticed this in my little evergreen tree. I wonder if it is an abandoned egg. I wouldn't expect to see an egg in the summer. But it's very pretty.
Some birds have 2 clutches a year... so maybe another baby is on the way!!!

She wants the broody to raise them. I think she just needs to keep her hands to herself.

Can anal glads become an eternal syst above the anus? My neighbors dog has this bulge that is the size of a quarter at least. The vet they took him to said it is an anal gland that is swollen...??? I felt it and I thought I could feel his anal glands where they are supposed to be but they were not full or inflamed.
The vet gave them 2 options : leave it or surgery... and he is too old for surgery.
I told them to have another vet check it out to see if it could be drained instead of cut off.
He sits on it and it does not hurt him.
I have seen inflamed/swollen AGs before and they hurt the dogs.
Any advice would be helpful... If needed I will post a pic.

Mom2 and anyone else that might know...

I rode the MC to the store and was hit with several rain drops that were ice cold. All out of a clear sky.
Do you need a trailer? You are close enough that you can call me.
I think that Sebastian has adapted to his blindness. I moved him to a bigger outside pen while I wait for the vet to get back to me. He seems to be much more calm with a larger area and a hollow log to hide in. Not once did he raise his tail in defense.

I have a nesting dove that is on her third brood this year.

Raz - Do you have a permit from the DNR for the little skunk ? If not, you will be hard put to find a vet to do that surgery on him. I use to rehabilitate wildlife and every time one had to go to the vet I had to have paperwork to accompany it. I was told by several different vets that whenever a wild animal comes in they have to automatically euthanize it or if they get caught they would lose their license. I have had several young raccoons to the vets in the past and each time I had to show papers before they would even consider looking at it. Just saying. Oh, and good luck with the DNR. They are idiots.

That is exactly what was happening! It rained before the clouds were overhead. The wind must have been pushing real hard up there!
Aww You are sweet, but we have one... just didn't have it when we needed it. :/ Of course!

Ok, I definitely do not have experience with this, but maybe there is a link in this. Remember when I asked the best way to break a broody hen? Well, DH was reading through a book by Gail Damerow and in it she said to take the broody and immerse it in ice water for a few minutes and that was the best, most effective way to go about breaking the broody hen because it helped to lower the hen's body temperature. Perhaps the ice in the nest was along the same lines in which the poster thought the hen was remaining broody and therefore needed to be broke so adding ice to the nest would make her stop being broody and start being a mommy to her new chicks.?.

eta- just wanted to add that I did not do this. I just left my hen broody.
