and am willing to pay...not a lot (LOL) so don't hold me hostage).
I have some green egg layers also, don't think I am very close to you though. will check google
Our vet suggested that I put our chickens together in a free range setting in the yard when they were ABOUT THE SAME PHYSICAL SIZE. As far as putting them together in a confined area, I think I would wait until they were used to each other while free ranging the yard and chose to roost together on their own.

That is why egg farm chickens are sometimes de beaked - chickens peck on each other when confined. They also tend to gang up and kill a weak or sick chicken.

Some people have multiple coops and runs to manage their flocks (ie. NOVA). That seems wise!
good advice. I usually let mine free range together till they decide to go in the coop with the big hens

some one had a bumble foot a while ago and used ?? on it with a lot of success. I have a hen with a scab on the bottom of her foot I noticed her limping a little today and checked it after they went to roost. does not look infected... can you give me the recipe for what you used please??

put up some Japanese beetle traps today, think I will freeze them for winter treats for the birds. They sure seem to love them

glambka, sorry, I am almost 3hr. away Theron is probably better at mailing

Hi everyone we are back from camp... again! Camper is unpacked, laundry done and the chickens got to run loose for the first time in a week. I did not read the over 600 posts for the past week so if anything really important happened let me know! All of the coops are hideously filthy and need some attention. DH took care of everyone this past week. His excitement was a rooster who escaped and wouldn't go in for two days and a pair of button quail who escaped inside. He had to dig them out from between the stove and counter with a fork, but all are well.

My son and I went to a family camp. We took Snowball our lone silkie with us. I made a harness and leash for her because pets are allowed if they are leashed. I had NO idea how many people, kids, teens, adults, grandparents would go out of their way to come and see her. Most were like "your poodle is so cute... it's a what?" I think she is the chicken that I will be working with to become a therapy animal. After this past week she now comes when I call her name. Nothing so sweet as a mostly feather blind bird coming to your voice.

Hope to catch up more soon.

I went to a chicken workshop at Michigan State this Spring. The vet there said that he did not recommend that we mix different age chickens together.
I think KrisRose is right - if they can run away then fine, but if they are trapped together in a run or coop, then mixing new chickens together or adults and teens together or any weak bird among stronger chickens can be dangerous.

I think bantams can be vulnerable among standard size chickens but I know it depends on the chicken.

I put my 9 week olds in with the 18 week olds 3 days ago; the 9 week olds are in the coop in a large metal dog crate. I just opened the crate this afternoon and they're getting bullied but not too bad yet; they're still exploring the coop at this point and my other pullets are mostly staying outside. They're coming up to the door and looking out but are too scared to come out. This is the first time I've integrated different age groups; does anyone have any advice on how to make things go more smoothly? Or is there a good age when mixing them would be better? They've almost outgrown the crate and my CX are taking up all my other available space and won't go to freezer camp for two more weeks.
They have been together for 3 days now and free ranged for weeks... They even put themselves all in the coop... all by themselves last night. I guess I just have to wait longer.
I gave him some vitamins and electolytes just to keep him going. I hope he will be alright. Live and learn.

The funny thing is he will probably be the biggest of all the chickens!! I hope he grows some nutterbutters and starts kickin some stinker BR butt!!!
Mary,
How do you trap Japanese beetles? If it is simple, I can freeze a bunch for your hens also.
Yes Yes how does one do this???

BYFM
Yes, I think you should wait longer. I think 6-8 week old chickens are too young to be in with larger chickens. Keep them separate until they are the same weight and then free range them together much longer before closing them in together. Hope your guy survives the beating. So sorry!

Just for poos and giggles!
Nugget and Noodle
They are getting soooo big! Almost as big as the SGs!
They are sleeping in the garage tonight.

6 chickens on a roost... sounds like the beginning to a bad joke!
Marsala, Cajun, Pattie's rear, Quesadilla
Is Quesadilla a roo?

Angry Marsala face... she was NOT ready for her close up!

Cajun... Handsome roo but a jerk sometimes.
I think he will taste wonderful!

Teriyaki in the nesting box

Hunan and Parmesana
Are Teriyaki and Parmesana roos?
The world may never know...
Saw one crow... I think it was Teriyaki. It is really hard to tell them apart unless you are close.

Hunan. Look at that handsome BLUE ear! Love this roo!

Pattie... She is, well... lets say special...

Hey Glambka!
I'm in Casco Twp., just east of Richmond. (Near 31 Mile/Gratiot).

I have blue/green eggs. I'm probably just a half hour from you. My husband says they are more blue. I remember them being more green. I'll check better tomorrow. PM me if you're interested. I probably have at least a dozen now and could have another dozen shortly (within a week or less).

How do I get in contact with a local 4H group?
I will have to do more googling...

Edit: Nevermind! Found it!

The chicks I got at CS are in the run but separated from the others. When my niece asked me why I did it that way, I told her it was cuz they did not have a comma to protect them from the others. They will not range until they are big enough and old enough to get away. The older ones can see them now, but not hurt them.
Got Skatter moved to the garage. Baby is starting to hatch. So, just in time.
They dont have a comma??? I tried to figure out the word, but couldn't. So, enlighten me. :)
