I'm mostly uninformed on the incubator front......but based on the VERY little I've seen/read, the basic hovabators look pretty much the same as the LGs. No? I'm completely open to some 'bator schooling as that sub-forum is overwhelming to a newbie like me. Wading through all the hatch-a-long threads gains me some information, but then that info gets contradicted/argued over and I don't know if I'm coming or going! If you know of a good thread to 2 for me to read though (no point in you re-typing what's already there!) please share!!

Not at all the same. The Little Giants are still air and not at all reliable. They have a hard time regulating their internal temperature which plays into the success of your hatches tremendously. I would guess Hova probably makes some still airs, too, but most of the Hovabators you see people using are forced air, which vastly improves hatch rates.

I'll take $75 for it. Paid $150 2 years ago. The styrofoam is a bit stained just from so much use (I've hatched a LOT of chicks, poults and goslings in that thing. I think it ran non-stop for most of that first year.) I would guess if I took some bleach and a scrubber to it it'd look a little prettier, I just haven't been motivated. Works like a champ every time. Only time I've had a "poor hatch" was when I asked DH to take the duds from one hatch out and said "DON'T take these eggs..." and he heard "Take these eggs..." and threw out most of the ones that were set to hatch and left the old ones. Contrary to his insistence however, I don't think we can blame that on the bator.

Anyone want or need a 4 foot by 4 foot brooder? I don't think I will ever get that many chicks at one time again. The brooder has a wood frame lid that has chicken wire.

True Ameraucanas are NOT Easter Eggers, they are a distinct breed.

The Ameraucana Breeders Club defines an Easter Egg chicken, or Easter Egger, as any chicken that possesses the blue egg gene, but doesn’t fully meet any breed description as defined in the APA standards. Further, even if a bird (that possesses the blue egg gene) meets an APA standard breed description, but doesn’t meet a variety description or breed true at least 50% of the time it is considered an Easter Egg chicken.

The American Poultry Association's American Standard of Perfection contains breed and variety descriptions of all recognized standard breed poultry in North America. This means if your bird does not meet a color requirement, it is in Easter Egger. However, it is highly unlikely to see an Easter Egger which meets all APA standards yet doesn't have the correct color. They are almost always mutt birds, or those descended from the Quechua.
While many hatcheries claim to sell "Ameraucanas", "Americanas", or "Araucanas", nearly none of them do. Most sell mutt Easter Eggers.
Yes, TC they are a different breed, and didn't mean to imply that they aren't. However, they are often referred to incorrectly as the EE, and they still have the similar egg color and physical characteristics. Thanks for correcting my spelling. I often go too fast to really watch what I'm typing.

OHH Benzie! My dad ran the Benzie County nursing home for years. But we moved away in 1973 and I haven't been there since the 80's. I say every year I'd like to go back but never do.

Good morning everyone. Finally getting some much needed rain. My new German New Hampshires are settling in (thanks HH)! These are beautiful birds that she raises. Very docile and friendly. That's the chicken report for now. DD, SIL, and Grandson are visiting from Boston and I think a wine tour is in order. No farming this weekend! Finally a break.

I say go for it! Sounds like a great deal to me. I have heard too many negatives about the LG bators. I loved my hovabator, it was so easy.
